Default Provisional licence

I'm sure this has been discussed several times over. I did my theory test back in 2001 and it covered car and old a1 bike. I was told lately that if apply a permit my old theory test may cover me. But im looking to get the A license now. Any ideas?

The theory test certificate is only valid for two years after the date
of issue. It seems this has been the case since the introduction
of the theory test back in 2001. See: S.I. No. 168/2001

Came across this on boards.ie. This guy did his theory test back in 2000/2001.

"Boom! No theory test for me:) Went into the ndls office with the intention of just asking a question about having to repeat the theory test but when I got there the wait time was over an hour. So I decided to fill out the application form to add the category A onto my license, take a chance."

He asked me for the theory test cert and I gave him the driving license and said the one I did for this should still be valid. That was it. No questions. Will have it in 5-7 working days.

You have nothing to lose by trying your luck at the local NDLS office.
They will either give you the learner permit or they will refuse
on the grounds that you don't have a current theory test cert.

Your case:
I am entitled to an exemption because I did the DTT between 2001
and 2006. As the A and B theory test was the same at that time, I am
exempt from a second test.

Possible responses from DTT/NDLS/RSA:

Your 2001 theory test cert is no longer valid, because it is more
than two years old.

Your category A* provisional licence (if you held one) has expired
for more than five years. You must now start the entire process
from scratch, starting with the motorcycle theory test.

Give it a go. Let us know how it works out.
