Red hot Austrian .

Any one ever had a fire behind the front sprocket cover , the bikes a ktm 950,happened to me the other day didnt notice it until i got off and seen the cover all melted and a great big hole in it , any way took it off to stick on a replacement and found alot of old chain oil build up in there to the point where it is rubbing all the way around the chain and its charred to fuck in there .
Some kind of friction fire maybe , ?
Any one had this happen before ?

Saw it happen on a truck's front wheel bearing once. Never on a bike, though

Re: Red hot Austrian .

I periodically pull of the sprocket cover and give it a good clean once a year.
It's free horsepower for a few minutes work.

It would have taken a lot of heat to start a fire. Are you sure the output shaft beating isn't goosed?

Re: Red hot Austrian .

A mate with a 950 Adventure had his shock melted when the header pipe basically burned through.

Is there any chance it could be exhaust related?? Hot gases from a cracked header.

No its all good there , i was thinking the chain would never generate that kind of heat , kinda stumped on it .

Re: Red hot Austrian .

Long shot,
Check the earth strap,I saw a cage years ago which had a broken earth strap
and the starter was earthing through the speedo cable.Generated enough heat to melt the clock.
As I said it's a long shot but if you're out of ideas.........

I'd be thinking this or kids messing trying to set fire to it. After all oil is a lubricant so even if it was packed in I still can't see it generate heat.
