Yamaha mt09 Tracer GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE?

So I'm getting a claim payout shortly and I'm undecided as to what to get....
I want to upgrade from my '00 Honda Varadero 1000xl to a new bike. I'm on the fence between the '19 Tracer GT and the '19 Versys 1000 SE. Both have similar hp and specs but I'm leaning towards the Kawasaki.
Do you guys have any advice between the 2 and do you guys have any other recommendations? I'm looking for a "sit up and beg" style scoot instead of a crotch rocket... Nothing against them at all, I just don't want to buy one.

Thanks

You really need to test drive them both if at all possible....they are both love or hate bikes. I think youíd have a better time on a 10,11,or 1290 though

Re: Yamaha mt09 Tracer GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE?

The brother has gotten a tracer 900 '18 model, they're nimble enough for their size but they're a bit heavy on the wrists. Heavy enough engine breaking on them and he was saying the fueling isn't great in low gear/rpm.
Nothing a dyno and mapping wouldn't sort but would you really want to be doing that with a '19 bike???

No you wouldn't really wanna be doing that. Paying for a Dyno after splashing out about 15k is not my idea of a good fuckin time.
Do you guys have any suggestions on other bikes?

The gt model has revised mapping,itís not the same as previous models. Also changes to wheelbase etc to get rid of the tank slappers

Very nice tracer being sold by a lad on here. Has had the ECU flashed by Moto tuning. Well kept and clean.

I'm not really a fan of KTM. Sorry, I sound like an entitled little prick but I'm really just being very picky since I'll be buying new so I don't want to compromise on what I like.

A guy I know went from a Vara to a Versys and he reckons the Kwak is the best bike he's ever owned.

Stock maps are generally shite. Every bike should by tuned on a dyno. The map that comes on a standard bike is a one-size-fits-all solution, which covers everything from 140 deg high temps to -50 lows. They're meant to just work OK in all environments and on all bikes, whereas a custom map will be made to suit your bike, and every bike is different.

Re: Yamaha mt09 Tracer GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE?

If you are buying a brand new bike a custom map will void your warranty!

Iím not saying itís unnecessary, you will definitely see some benefits on some bikes more than others, however both the Tracer and Versys are running can bus with self adaption, they are much more sophisticated ECUís these days than previously fitted to motorbikes. They have a base map that will adjust parameters in line with the use the bike is getting, the environment itís being used in,and wear and tear on certain items like spark plugs, air flow in the filter etc.

The real benefit you get from a custom map is removing restrictions within the ecu that are designed around noise and emissions regulations

Having had the MT09, that engine is an absolute hooligan. Super torqy and extremely fun to ride... that pared with the comfort of the GT must be an ideal package, that triple engine has been bullet proof since launch too so... you know what's my recommendation.

Re: Yamaha mt09 Tracer GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE?

try a tigersport 1050, it kinda sits in between the tracer 900 and the versys 1000
i just did 1700 kms at the week end, 600km were done yesterday, i could do the same today
i have 65,000 odd kms on it, with no issues,
they are underrated but highly recommended
coming at great value from the uk at the minute

Re: Yamaha mt09 Tracer GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE?

Had a varadero 1000 few years back now just got a Versys 650 2016 model and while the riding position is great I find it too under powered but then it is the 650 not the 1000 - They have done quite a lot of improvements on it in the last 2 years. My preference would go to the Tracer btw the 2.

However I would love to get the tiger sport 1050 as my next one.

Best bike so far has been a 2011 Tiger 800XC for me.

Re: Yamaha mt09 Tracer GT or Kawasaki Versys 1000 SE?

So I went and checked out both bikes at bike world. I didn't like the peg position on the tracer so that's out. I fell in love with the Versys so I'm test riding a 2013 tomorrow to see if I like the ride and if I do then I'll need placing an order for a 2020 model.
