K1300s vs R1200GS vs ....

If you had to have just one bike as your tool of choice, to commute (100 kms a day, fast motorways & filtering equal parts) and you want to take the same bike to travel Europe once or twice a year 3-5 days at a time, and you hope to go further away than that (lotto etc... to eventually ride on poorly surfaced roads), what would be your choice?

I am more or less happy with my F800GT for commute and occasional distance work, and it has more than enough power for my abilities to be honest, but I am just itching for an upgrade I suppose. I was reading up on F850GS and it looks great except for the chain (I massively dislike chain maintenance. Shaft or belt is the only choice).

Between K1300S and R1200GS ... for those who have tried both, any thoughts?

There are loads of chain-oilers (apart from the overrated scottoilers) that can go over 3,000miles on one fill, which is plenty and probably the equivalent of a BMW's rear main seal.

If you can stay abreast of the recalls and catastrophic failures of shaft-drives and tele-lever suspension (ie. drive around like an auld woman) then the 1200GS would be easier to sell than a K1300S when you got back from abroad.

Honda would be very reliable but probably lead to manic depression and suicidal thoughts or self-harm on the continent so I'd say a KTM 1290GT for the criac or if you needed fully secure topbox / luggage / pillion comfort ; the KTM 1290S Super Adventure.

Little pot-belly wankers with h'attitude fighting low libidos and the early onset of alzheimers will implore you to briskly make haste for the motorrad showroom, but that's only because they need a step-ladder to mount anything else.

The 1090 adventure would be a nice progression from the F800, if you didn't mind 1290 owners sniggering down the back,.. roads.

I have the K1200S and R1200GS. Both are great bikes and the power of the K1200S is jaw dropping, silky smooth 4 cylinder however I did find my legs cramping on long journeys(400klms) and I'm by no means tall and its by no means a hard core sports bike. I currently have a R1200GS and it really ticks all the boxes. If you can adjust to the tractor sound of the boxer twin and the envious glances and non-BMW types constantly waving for your affection not to mention the jealous "rib tickling" from certain member on this forum then it really is a great all rounder. Try and test ride both ..

Plus plenty of free coffee at Motorrad dealers.

Was up in the Hodson Bay 18 months ago and one of "my bro's" dropped out on his 1290S without the Beemer lads noticing, we slipped away for a daycent ride out to Ballycurrin Lighthouse and the flooded bridge on the river Suck, handy pilot that but I had to lead the way through the flooded road, ye'r man never saw the like of it, do you still have the video Brendan

I super biased, but it'll have to be the GS for me.

Sitting position is perfect, super comfy and if you have ESA the ability to flick between comfy ride to a more firm sporty ride depending on your mood is just fabulous.

It won't win any track days but it has more than enough power for the real world, in the twisties you would be able to catch up with any other bike.

Get a set of panniers and you'll have plenty of space to carry all you need.

If you maintain your bike accordingly, you won't have any issues same as any other brand.

Latter model has cruise control & few other bits.

Yoshi pipe & ECU flash make a huge difference

I had a k1300s for two years. Its a very good machine. All day comfortable and stunningly fast. Easy bike to bumble around town on, and eats up the motorway miles as well. Good on petrol, I was getting 63mpg cruising at 40mph once, roadworks so had to go slow!
Fairly reliable but I had to replace the left hand side switchgear when the esa button stopped working. That was over 200. Aside from that it was a hassle free bike. Traded it in for a Ducati multi strada as I prefer v twin engines.

Would have to be the K13 for me. Owned a K12 for a couple of years and have driven the 13. Great motorway bike with comfy ergos. Dont know or care if the blackbird/busa/zzr are faster but they all put more load on knees and hips. Did a fortnight long european tour on the K12 and found it perfect for covering big miles.
Suppose if you were covering poorly surfaced roads the gs would be the one to go for. Personally not a fan of the kite (trailie) position for long motorway miles, always found the classic sports tourer to be more suitable.
Can be picked up in the uk for as little as 4K stg. A small price to pay to fulfill the typical bmw stereotype of not waving/mid life crisis/thinking you're better than everyone else....yada yada yada

BMW badge is least of my priories - before I bought the F800GT, I had an 03 Fazer for over 10 years, complete with plastic ties holding rear wheel hugger in place etc. Great bike and must have done over 100k kms on it.

GT was picked up purely because it has belt drive. I used to do 100 km+ five days a week rain or shine, and maintaining the chain on dark wet miserable winter nights after coming home soaked to the bones... even with all that maintenance, and routinely changing chain and sprockets, the chain fell apart and left me stranded once. Luckily it was while pulling away from traffic lights on the back-roads near UCD, on a dry warm morning... could've been a lot worse if it was on M1 / M50,. I understand that chain is the most efficient power transfer mechanism etc but belt sounded great for my needs.

Now that I have this bike, I do love the ESA - call me an old woman or whatever but there's no point suffering a stiff sport suspension when you are cruising along on the M1. One touch of the button and the bike is like a magic carpet ride... I don't know which other bikes offer this level of dampening / smooth ride, that's definitely something I would like to keep in bikes going forward.

PS: Admin, Royal Enfield was the 'tosser bike' in India up until recently. Anyone who wanted to compensate for something - typically height, or wanted to look macho etc would flock to Royal Enfields even though they were twice as expensive compared to popular & reliable Hondas and Suzukis, and always broke down or leaked oil. Bit like Harleys I suppose. Lately RE have reinvented them as a bit more "retro" bike with cafe racer etc.

Belts can and do snap too,shafts can strip out or worse...pick your poison. But yeah,a chain is certainly more hassle for maintenance. What about a vfr 12,some motor in them,but love or hate though

Ditto on the badge front. I'm no Beemer fanboy having owned all 4 jap brands in the past. Esa is a brilliant bit of kit as were the servo brakes. Thing that scared me were the horror stories of abs/brake servo/esa going wrong and having to dig very deep in the wallet to fix it.
Had a drove belt snap on me before (buell ) so do you carry a spare and is it a side of the road fix on the f800?

Take a test ride on the new Enfield Interceptor, fantastic piece of kit although the exhaust note is very much subdued compared to the one I took for a test ride in Delhi

Thing is though, parts availability for the Royal Enfield would be massive, no matter what part of India you are in. That, and every backstreet mechanic would know them inside out.
The same would not be true of Honda/Suzukis etc.
LML's clone of the Vespa would be another very common bike over in India

This was actually not the case, at least in the 80s, 90s and 00's. Honda had tie up with an Indian company called Hero, so the brand image in India was "Hero Honda", and similarly "TVS Suzuki". and everything was manufactured within India, with tieup / license deals with Honda/Suzuki.

Hero Honda and TVS Suzuki had dozens of models, mostly around 100 to 150cc, uber ecomoical, ultra reliable bikes that did 50-80 kilometers to a liter of petrol (1.2l/100km). They sold like hot cakes as well, literally sold in millions. Parts were all locally produced and cheap. Royal Enfields were far and few back then, and they did like 30 kms to a liter of petrol (3l/100km) and were expensive to repair. They had that macho image / tosser image, depending on which side you are looking at it from, but they were also used by Indian Army and Police forces, so they had that positive image going for them as well.

Recently, Indian bikes are still doing cracking business there (literally millions of bikes every year), and all the regular brands like your Kawazakis, BMWs, KTMs, Hondas, HD are all selling well there,, although not as many as the smaller Indian bikes.

2 very different bikes.I have a newish k13s and and oldish gs1150.The gs is supposed to be the winter hack but with the shitty summer we ve had its getting used a lot.The gs1200s are different I know but they're very top heavy and high like the 1150.The boxer engines are lovely old characters and I cant imagine selling my 1150.The k13 is a beast and the torqueyest bike Ive ever had,the sound out of the akro pipe and quickshifter is music.All boxer engines sound like flatulance in comparison.If I had to pick one Id go with the k13 as it excites me which is why I have bikes.

Why not try an FJR1300, surprisingly agile for its size, handles well and no bother filtering with it. Wandered around Spain and France on one for 2 weeks a couple of years ago. Should be even better now that it has a 6 speed gearbox.
