Best headlight bulbs?

Whats everyone using at the moment thats good and reliable? Also, where in Ireland can I drop in an get em?

Halfrauds want savage money for one bulb of their own brand so I couldnt stomach paying it.

Google says the Philips Xtreme Moto jobbies are daycent but can these be gotten here?

Cheers

Compare prices locally with what is available online, if you aren't in a big rush, just to make sure you aren't being gouged

As above, useful to know the type you are after. Best bang per buck these:

If you can afford more go for night breaker sort of.

Re: Best headlight bulbs?

In my case they are H7 but it was a general question about what the best and where to get em.
Id rather not convert to any HID shite and I think LED are still not great in an older headlight housing???

Halfrauds want 20+ per decent bulb which is total bollox so I only got one of their own brand standard bulbs to get me home in the dark. I'd prefer to pick something better up locally. I check a few motor factors in my area but doubt they would stock moto marketed bulbs. Maybe that in itself is a load of shite.

I recently moved to Walkinstown and on way home was passing the motor factors beside Borza and noticed they were still open @7pm. Apparently open till 8PM Mon - Thu. Great!

Picked up a set (2) of Osram NightBreakers for 25. Had them before and recall them being good so hope thats not changed. If shite, ill let ye know to avoid :thumbsup2:

+50% H7 from Lidl. (E1) marked (Germany) and have been in my Bandit for 6 years.
€5.99 for the pair.

Almost as bright/white as Osram Night Beakers and they last (a lot) longer.

Good stuff, I think I have a few spare sets of H4's collecting dust in the garage if anyone wants a set. Donation to DSI and I'll post them to you.

fwiw, i went thru the full range from cheap to ridiculous bulbs over the years, had all the snow whites ice blue's etc ....I converted to h4 LED and am well happy with them. rarely need to go onto full headlight, dip beam suffices. i understand LED is a marmite thing, just another option.

Re: Best headlight bulbs?

I wouldnt use anything except the Osram Night Racer or Night Breaker bulbs for my particular bike. Retail at about €30 but you can get them a lot cheaper on ebay if you search.

Switching to Night Racers is the first thing I do with any bike I have. So much brighter than factory fitted bulbs, but the thing I like most is the beam pattern now lights up bits of the road and verge that normal bulbs simply dont.

I find it strange that some bikers will think nothing of spend €100+ on safety gear or getting their bike to go a few KPH faster and then balk at spending €30 on decent bulbs. Surely its better to see the hazard and avoid it then rely on safety gear to protect you once you hit it. Are you going to be able to go a few KPH faster at night if you cant see where you are going?

Personally I would buy the very best bulbs I could get for my bike, no matter how expensive they are. They are the best and cheapest mod you can make to your bike and could possibly save you from a spill or accident. Why skimp on something like that?

Are moto marketed bulbs different from cage bulbs?

Exactly,my thought was its just another marketing ploy but they were not any more expensive for the cage equivalent. I just figured one was sold in a bike shop and one in a cage shop.

Same here. The early LED H4 bulbs were quite shit, being too big on the actual light emitting bits, which caused a lot of scattered light and unwanted dazzle and annoyance. About 2015 I found that smaller, neater LEDs were being produced for a decent price by Nite-eye, so took a punt on them.

The smaller COBs are fairly common now, and the price has plummeted, but it's still a crap-shoot, because not all headlamp units suit them. The wrong LED in the wrong headlamp will still cause dazzle, and apart from that, waste a lot of light that could be lighting the road.
Anyway, I found a few pairings of lamps and bulbs that work well for me, don't dazzle other road users, and not had to pay through the nose for them.

I now have a bucket full of old H4 halogens that are sod-all use to me.

Supposedly they're more rugged and vibration resistant.
I think that's bollocks, but there you go, that's what the marketing wonks say.

I can see how its a crapshoot alright, must've got lucky straight away with mine so. I'm running them in an LSL MT-03 unit. have to say one thing, I'm not particularly worried about dazzling other cars, it takes their eyes off facebook, they know I'm about, and with most cars now running hi power xenons etc I'm happy I can see when they're coming at me. Saying that, the beams on the ones i have are adjustable and my h4's came directed left so the beam's not dead on blinding. I still get a good spread of light but the white spot isnt aimed straight at the traffic.
