Automatic bikes,or are they just big mopeds

Iím sure thereís split opinions on these,Iím a bit undecided myself still....be interesting to hear peopleís thoughts on them, particularly those living with them long term.

Having just gotten a proper spin on a Africa Twin DCT....well itís bloody impressive, but Iím still not sure Iíd have one over a manual, and I canít really see why I wouldnít, with the obvious lack of a clutch lever and gear pedal put aside you can pretty much do anything the manual offers, but in a much more efficient way.Seamless up and downshifts with the paddles, can drop a gear or upshift while in auto mode etc. which I think is great that you donít have to switch over to semi or fully auto for that to be an option. Itís a damn good bike, and if I was getting one I think Iíd be having a difficult time choosing between a manual and auto!!

Sounds great, no clutch, can you do burnouts and wheelies on it though? but for the most part I would like to test ride one.

Well...no clutch lever, but an extra clutch :lbhbh:

The answer is yes,you can do both. Full manual mode,tc and rear wheel abs off and youíre away in a one wheeled cloud of smoke:ninja:

Itís not a bike you warm to after a short spin but when you get a feel for how it all works best itís a quality piece of engineering.

Have the manual AT. Never rode the DCT so can't comment on it. Reviews say it's a great piece of kit. Think it was Ä1500 more expensive than manual, so I'd prefer to spend that on luggage or other items. Also adds weight to the bike.

Possibly another thing to go wrong.
Lots of different Honda issues with the AT on the forums. Probably no worse than any other manufacturer, but it seems Honda cut some corners originally getting this bike to market.

Only issue I had was corroding spokes (steel) which Honda replaced both wheels.

Ride both....make your choice.

I read about the suspension issues alright, and some dct issues, snatchy engagement from idle being one of them and thats what the one I had was experiencing, but calibrating the clutches seems to have solved that problem.

What else is causing issues on them out of curiosity?

From what I have read...

Spoke issues
Sticking starter switch
Cold start issue
Poor castings on engine
Poor factory fitted heated grips

But overall, anyone who owns one, loves them. Most owners (including myself) won't use them to their potential. A great bike for Irish roads. All day comfort, enough power for what you need & good for all weathers.

Took mine to France & Spain last year & off again on another Euro trip in May. Have 19k up on mine in 15mths & no issues bar spokes. Very econimica if ridden easy. 65mpg easily ridden within speed limits. Drops with enthusiasm:wassat:

I think they're a great idea for people who might have lost a leg or the use of it in an accident. It allows them to ride a bike.
For anyone else, WTF?

With no clutch lever to distract ya it will be much easier to keep abreast of whats happening on social media.

I rode the Africa DCT and I was pretty impressed, not my cup of tea but I'm sure a lot of people would enjoy it.

If anything, I would much rather have a nice quick shifter.

Now, a Harley with an automatic transmission?? That's the real american dream! (yuk)

I have the crosstourer DCT. Took me a while to come around to it. But I will probably stick with DCT now. Only downside I find is not being able to slip clutch when doing slow manoeuvres.
Incidently, I have had the both African twin DCT and nc750x DCT for a couple of days each when I was getting mine serviced. I actually found the NC more fun.

Think you're getting mopeds confused with scooters and scooters confused with autos, they're 3 different things.

I've my Honda CTX with the DCT for 3 and a half years now I use it nearly every day all year round and it's never missed a beat. It has nearly 32K on the clock and the only things I've had to sort is normal wear and tear (tyres, chain and sprockets). As some of you know I've a paralysed right arm so throttle etc transferred to the left handlebar it's a great bike for a disabled rider who's thinking of getting to biking after an accident like me. I wasn't interested in having to use throttle, break and clutch all with the same hand so it's perfect for me.

I've been all over Ireland on it a few Revvup runs and different overnighters with other bikers I just stick it into sport mode and I can keep up with most lads on the twisties:thumbsup2: It has the 700cc DCT engine so can be ridden on an A2 licence we won't talk about lads and lassies leaving me for dead on long straight roads :doh:but who cares about those roads:lbhbh:

I just see all these gizmos as more stuff to go wrong and costing a fortune to fix but maybe im just a tight bastard.

They're ptobably getting better in terms of usability and functionality now - but half the craic in sports bikes is having a high revving snarly engine that you can play toons with up and down a close-ratio box.

Take that away and you're one step closer to bikes getting just a bit too sensible - all imho of course.

There's a load of vids on youtube about the trouble some have with the DCT system.
I'd see it as paying more money just to have another (expensive) thing to go wrong on the bike

Honda CB400A, while not quite fully automatic ,was a pleasant enough yoke to commute on.
