Default Black reg plates

Hi all, as title said. Why would bike from 1996 will have black reg plate?

Previous owner had it made up in that style.

Bought a 2000 bike with that style plate on it, but I swapped it over to the EU standard black on white when going to the continent as they're not legal and it's a shitty technicality to be pulled on.

Those german plates have a much sexier font than the shitty Irish ones, and are one of the few things you can get away with.

Yeah thanks for replies gents.
Dont want judge the guy(or girl) to put them on. Was thinking about the army as well or I thought I missed something about the classic/vintage rules.
Its on my shopping list so I just want to be sure its everything legal.
