Default Used Speed Triple R or New MT09

I'm sure this is a subjective matter but just seeing if anyone maybe has experience of both to shine a bit of light on it.

-The reason I'm talking in £stg is I'm based in the North.

I've always been mad for a 2012 onwards Speed Triple R, recently I've been considering adding one to the stable. They go for around £7k-£7.5k stg.
The reason I want the R is the upgraded suspension (easier to setup for a heavier lad such as myself) and lighter wheels and its a bit better looking.

The new MT09 has become a big distraction now though... in the 2017 model they've fixed the fuelling/throttle issues and also sorted the shit suspension out from the previous incarnation. The MT09 goes for £8k stg brand new...

The purpose of the bike will be mainly for evening and weekend antics, maybe the odd weekend trip and possibly track-days down the line.

The Speed Triple has more power, better spec and finish but is a good 20-30kg heavier...

The MT09 is brand new with 2 year warranty, 20-30kg lighter, probably a bit more character too...

Anybody got experience with both??

I'm sorta thinking as a second bike the MT09 is the better shout whereas the Speed Triple would be a better call as a primary bike because its a better all-round package...

I'm not mad into the new Street Triple before anyone suggests it...

Cheers for the input

Very nice, would love a go at the tail of the dragon. Was that the '17 MT09 or the older one?
I had an '11 street triple, loved that bike just not mad about the new one... seems a little too refined for my liking, almost like a 4 pot.

Our ST is a 16 R model ( 675 motor ) and that was a 15 FZ-09 they call them over here
the FZ had the suspension re-done and it was very nice... until I rode the St all it had done was a Ixil slip on

Iíd probably go Spred Triple R myself based on nice PVM wheels and ohlins. I donít think either would excel on track but for road fuckery that would be my choice

Uffff... that will be my next step hopefully 2018.

Love them both, but I think I'll pull the trigger on the MT09, probably much better re-sale value and millions of aftermarket stuff to pick from.

Can't go wrong with the Speed triple thuogh, savage yoke.

I would say always buy the bike you want and that you enjoy more as opposed to what’s ‘better’. Unless it’s a reliability/mileage purchase

I had a similar thought to you but it was an MT07 or a street triple.
People said the MT was a better beginner bike and the Street triple was a better road bike.

I'm not sure how this helps in your situation...........

Only a grand !?!?

Jesus I was expecting closer to 2k... ohlins suspension etc. Then again they couldnt price it too close to the MT10 I suppose. Interesting!

Good point. I need to get out for a spin on them... I went to test ride the MT09 but all they had was a Tracer, very flickable and engine was lovely but wasn't enough to gauge what the MT09 itself would be like.

Need to find a place across in britland where I can get a spin on both...

The speed triple would have more grunt than an mt09.
Rode mt09 very recently, nice bike but having ridden a speed triple back in 2013 before I bought my smt, and absolutely loving it, that would be my choice here.
