Step back to the 05/06 model instead, less weight, more power and not as ugly

There was a recall on the 07-08 model - head gasket replacement. check make sure this was done. My own is the 08 model - have not had an ounce of trouble with it. (I have it over four years now and use it as my daily commuter... approx 500 km a week.)

likes to eat soft tyres though

I used to have '04 zx6rr and '06 zx636r, one of the best bikes I've drove. Over 30k km I did on each of them, and never have a single issue, track days and all.

As any bike/model, you'll find people that love them and people that hate them :P

I'll suggest to look into brand specific forums and see what are the common problems, etc... no bike is perfect, so I guess you just pick and choose your battles :)
