Default Should I wear an L vest?

Hi all, just passed the lgbt and got myself a bandit. thanks for all the advice and guidance on these forums - this is my first proper post but I am sure there are lots more like me learning loads from the forum even if they say nothing.

I'm interested in views on whether it makes sense to wear an L vest. I know it is the law. And in general, I follow all the safety advice, the law, etc. I plan on keeping myself very safe and in check while on two wheels.

But - there seems to be a school of thought out there that wearing an L vest invites trouble. And my experience of cage drivers while wearing one while with my instructor hasn't been great - although I can't say if any one incident is because of the vest.

Thoughts? Or am I being dumb - it's the law so do it?

3 points on your licence wont look too good if you are pulled in or are unfortunate to be involved in a RTA.
Wear it,time will fly by.

thanks lads. just to be clear, it's not that i'm too cool for it or embarassed to wear it. i'd wear an orange jump suit if i thought it would keep me safer!

the point is, does it attract an attitude from cagers. but you seem to think not?

It can. No-one wants to be "stuck behind" a learner. Just ride super-defensively, and yes - still do wear your L vest.

Its as simple as this. Those car drivers that don't give a damn about anyone else on the road will never notice you wearing the L vest. Its not that they see the L vest and then decide to drive like a moron, they are going to drive like a moron anyhow.

So not wearing your L vest is NOT going to stop some people driving like a moron, but it will get you points on your license and that in turn is going to have a serious effect on your insurance.

Wear the vest, nothing to be embarrassed about, and with some drivers (maybe not many) they will see it and give you more space and a little bit more consideration.

Wearing mine and never thought not too.

Keep your road position and don't be bullied by cagers. Wear a backpack even empty at least that way you're not breaking the law

Thanks lads, seems to be a consensus building.

To change the question slightly - anyone know where one might be had in Blanchardtown? Do Halfords do them? (Course if there's a spare one going anywhere...)

When you first start riding you feel vulnerable. Every twitch of a cage/van seems to translate into a direct attempt on your life plus, because you've a whole new set of coordinated movements bouncing around in your skull that you've yet to commit to muscle memory, you're not really in sync with the flow of traffic. But that's the world against a novice biker, in your head at least.

I believe that this is the reason why some people consider the L vest to be similar to wearing a bullseye on your back. A perceived threat. Wear the vest, follow the advice of your instructor, put as many miles on the bike as soon as you can and in no time at all you won't even recognise yourself and how you handle situations now compared to a few months previous.

Know this.
Everyone else on the road is trying to get where they are going as quick as possible. They don't care about anyone else on the road.
Drive as if every one of them is out to kill you.

You probably don't have access to PM yet.

Post up your mobile number leaving a space in between each number and Dusty will probably pop you a text message.

I have an L vest there I can post to you if dusty rhodes can't find his. The advice I'd give is if you think someone in a [email protected] is up yer arse and being aggressive just pull over and leave them go. It might seem like the wussy thing to do because the natural reaction when you think your life is being threatened is to let the red mist descend but you're on a bike and they're in a two tonne steel box so the consequences are a lot worse for you if something goes wrong so don't react leave them go.

If you've already passed a test, shouldn't you be wearing and "N" vest instead?

Passing the l.B.T. doesn't qualify you for a full licence. It merely suggests you are competent enough to take to the road, as a learner on a motorbike, unaccompanied.

You must wear an L vest until you sit (& pass) your full test. Then, if you haven't held a full licence in any other category prior to passing your motorbike test, you are required to wear an N vest for two years. If like me you already have a full driving licence for more than two years then, once you pass your bike test, you are free to ride without the N vest.
