Honda X8R

I'm going to be getting a '00 Honda X8R from a friend for free. He hasn't used it in 5 or 6 years, and it has been sitting in his garage just taking up space.
Looking forward to getting it running, and having it as a little runabout for nipping down to the shops on, or the short commute into work.
It will allow me to give the xr650 some tlc without having to rush anything to get the bike ready to drive into work.

Re: Honda X8R

A mate had one of them years ago and it was surprisingly nippy. I enjoyed riding it. They're two strokes so if it's been parked up it might need a full rebuild. Definitely price up all the parts and tools you'd need for a full rebuild before you commit to it.

Re: Honda X8R

I know he got the exhaust replaced with an aftermarket one, which would have got rid of some of the restriction. CDI limits revs, and the stock pulley/variator diameter is another limiting factor on top speed.
A mate of the brother used to carry a spare piston with him back in the day, and more than once did a roadside replacement on his Yammy BWS.
I'll take it off him anyway, as it'll be fun to work on & get running again

Re: Honda X8R

Got the bike delivered last night, and into the workshop. Battery had been left connected, for the last 8 years, and so was totally dead. The optimate charger didn't even recognise a battery was connected to it when I tried to charge it just to see if it would take a charge. I didn't expect it to, but no matter though, as a new motobatt one is due to arrive today.
Tomorrow, the bike will get a good clean, as it is filthy after sitting uncovered in a garage for years. Old petrol in the tank will need draining, and the brake fluid will also have to be changed.

Re: Honda X8R

I had one a good few yrs ago , I used it for commuting etc. Was a hoot. Runs on a wiff of juice, nippy enough 30mph. Good brakes. Only downside, is rear shock can be a little soft, but you could buy aftermarket, not too dear. Id prob do that if you get on with it.

replace the rollers. Cheap enough. Give it a good clean, connections / fluids etc. you wont be disappointed. Not sure re air filter, but id replace too and new plug. The engines if looked after are fairly solid. Id say the tyres being that old are well dried out.

as well as whatever big bikes ive had / have, i use an xmax 250 at the moment. Its savage. No gears, handy for the commute, loads of storage. Sure, other idiots on bikes look down on you on a scoot, but fuk em if they only knew...but id never turn up on a panigale / fireblade the next day to gloat or get one over, too long in the tooth for that. Fuks on bikes wont move over for you either at lights, so you may have to get argy bargy now and again.

be interested to see what you think of it.

I've got an iridium plug for it, new motobatt battery, and just ordered a malossi kevlar drive belt for it.
Bro said back in the day, one of his mates got a fair performance boost by just fitting a kevlar belt to his 50cc BWS.

Re: Honda X8R

Took the power hose to it this morning and blasted the built up dust/dirt off it.
New battery in, and indicators are working. Just getting a click from the starter relay, and nothing from the starter motor, so tmw I'll get the multimeter out to see whether 12v is getting to the starter motor or not.
I emptied out the oil that was in the tank, and found the low oil light on the dash & sensor in the oil tank are both working. Tomorrow I'll take the fairings off so I can get at the carb & drain that. Petrol tank to be drained out. I'll need to bleed the oil line too, as I have had the tank off, and don't want to starve the engine of oil due to an air lock in the tube.

Re: Honda X8R

If its a 2 stroke your biggest issue will be crankshaft seals and possibly main bearings. Get some oil in on them and turn it over by hand with plug(s) out before firing up as the bearings are likely to have dried out. If not being done now they are likely to have a short lifespan.

Tyres are time expired too but after that a lot of cleaning and lubing up.

I tried hooking the starter straight up to a fully charged spare battery - nada. Took it off and it is properly seized up - new one ordered for 35

I checked the date codes on them for the craic - front is 2001 vintage, and rear is 2005!

My bro had one of them from new - much taller than any of his mates scoots (Yammy BWS aka 'B-Wizz'). His was the aircooled one, not the liquid cooled one

My mate who I got the x8r from actually had one of those liquid cooled SRs before the x8r. It was rough though. He paid 600 for it, and then traded it in on the x8r and got 1000 for it in trade-in - winner winner chicken dinner!

I'm going to strip & rebuild the front caliper, as one of the pistons isn't right - pad going in at an angle. The end of the piston looks like it has been attacked with an angle grinder!
Apart from that, general cleaning up

I've still to collect the logbook from my mate - will do that the next time I'm up in Dublin. Probably the end of the month. Hopefully the Nokia 3310 arrives from China before then - I already have the litre of vodka bought for him!

Got the ped running yesterday, after taking the carb off & attacking the inside with an airline. No mad buildup of gack inside though.
Carb was manky on the side closest to the wheel, as a couple of rubber sheet guards were in bits. I replaced these with new ones I made using the old ones as templates. Hopefully these will keep road crud away from the carb.
Onwards and upwards!

Oh it's running alright! Starts first kick. Smokes like a trooper, but I haven't given it a rip around the estate yet, so it remains to be seen if it is still smokey when warmed up.

I've been using the moped in & out of work this week. You'd want to have seen the smoke out of it on the first day - like it had a smoke generator attached like a plane in an aerial display team! After a couple of days, this had all burnt off, and is now running fine.
Top speed is 60kmh on the flat, 65kmh downhill. I reckon the belt is stretched/slipping, so will be fitting the kevlar belt I got for it this weekend - I expect an increase in top speed & acceleration from stop
