Default Question.

A mate in his fifties wants a bike and has got a learner permit for category A. Can he ride an unrestricted V Strom 650?
Iíve pointed him in the direction of the v Strom as he wants to go to Italy in the near future. Found a nice one in the uk but itís the newer model and these donít seem to be as easy as the old model to restrict via ecu swap.

I think the ruling with regard to your friend would be that yes, he could ride that bike unrestricted once he has completed the applicable lgbt.

he can't ride anything without the I-B-T and he can't go on holidays without the full license, permits don't mean anything outside of the country

Ring the I b t instructor and ask. There could be trouble with insurance if he was to use his own bike

It is difficult to answer without more details. Assuming he is starting from
scratch with a new learner permit, he will need to do the mandatory training
before he takes to the road.

As he has a valid category A permit, he has already done the
theory test. Next he needs training modules 1,3,5 on a category
A bike.

He can't take the test until six months after the issue date
of his permit (six month rule).

Several on-line references specify the V-Strom 650 as
having engine output of 49kw. If this is the case, he
can't use if for the test or for I-B-T because it doesn't
meet the 50kw requirement. Check specs carefully
before turning up for the test.

...he wants to go to Italy in the near future....
As others have said, he needs the full licence first.

He is starting from scratch and think intention was to do direct access 18 hrs module 1,3 5.
Didnít read anything about six month rule.
Did see the v storm on some sites as suitable for Class A .

That is the most sensible option for anyone over 24.

The requirements for the A test are: 595cc+ 175kg+ 50kw+.
The 650 V-Strom meets the first two. There is some doubt about
the third.

No need to restrict. Will need to do the lgbt and have a A provisional.

Mo Garvey is a great instructor

He will need to use her bike as he won't be insured on his own bike until he completes the lgbt.

Isn't the curvy SV650s k2 good for the test. And that's 169kg dry as far as I know. Can anyone confirm before I panic and lash it on done deal for a bag of peanuts.
