UK Reg bike - riding without tax

Imported a new bike from NI through a southern dealer, who will be taking care of the paperwork, VRT etc., but I'm told that this is backlogged at the moment, and might take a week or more to get an Irish reg plate. The bike is otherwise ready to go.
Am I OK to ride the bike on the UK Reg, untaxed as I can't do until its Irish registration is sorted?

Thanks

Re: UK Reg bike - riding without tax

If you do decide to ride it be very careful where you park as them hures of traffic wardens will do you for no tax, got done with the cage a few years ago in Newbridge. I landed back to trotter watch putting a fine on the cage visor.... Course I said - Hey buddy i have paid for my parking, sure there is a ticket there in front of you and all...He replied smugly...you might have paid for the parking but you have no tax...

The Jobsworth cnut!
Yeah, id love to take it out for a few handy spins, but I'll avoid the hassle if possible.
Was just wondering if I had any grace period while the reg is being sorted.
Prob down to the discretion of the cop, or their own interpretation of the roolz.

UK vehicles don't have tax discs, so there is no way for a
warden to know whether it is taxed or not.

Best of luck with it. I'm surprised no one has asked the
obvious questions:
What bike did you get?
Where are the photos ?

You'll be fine, insurance is the thing to watch out for, most companies won't cover for over 30 days on yellow reg and then they say they'll report you.

You'll be fine... until you're stopped and they see you have an Irish license, then they'll probably confiscate the bike.

You're not allowed to ride the bike on English plates at all. It has to be on Irish plates and taxed and insured before you can legally ride it on the road. All it takes is one cunt of a cop, so, statistically, there's about a 1 in 1000 chance you'll get away with it if you're stopped.

Re: UK Reg bike - riding without tax

Of course you are allowed. You own the bike. The problem is that you will only get insurance on UK plates for about a month, after which they will report the plate to, I think, revenue.

Re: UK Reg bike - riding without tax

There are no penalty points for tax, it's a revenue offence not a Road Traffic one.

UK registered bike does not require tax in the South. Don't go north however.

If you have confirmation date of VRT appointment you are fine to use the bike; keep either hard copy of the appointment on you or have the email on your phone.

As previously stated your insurance normally allows a month or so on the UK plate to facilitate exactly this type of scenario

Re: UK Reg bike - riding without tax

It's not illegal to run around on english plates , you are pretty much fine if you are insured and have the vrt booked .

I had a case where the log book never came in the post (previous seller insisted on changing owner with the DVLA ) i had to wait 2 months to get that back , no fine for the vrt no issue at check points .

Re: UK Reg bike - riding without tax

Once your bike is sold in the UK it is shown on the DVLA site as tax expired. Don't dream of driving it in NI, as ANPR on all plod cars will spot you, stop you and seize the bike, maybe even send it to be crushed if its MOT is out.

Down here, bring your cert of insurance with you in case you get stopped by the Gardai. Traffic Corps love seizing bikes or cars if they even have a doubt that its not legit. They will leave you standing on the side of the road, while your bike gets brought to the compound.
At that stage, depending on where you are, they will contact customs, who will take the bike from them, and hang onto it until you can prove you have the registration in hand, and if not you get to pay a nice fine to get your bike back. (portion of VRT I think?)NCT may be backlogged but you should still have an appointment. Keep this appointment notification on your phone. If you don't have it, get it.
You didn't buy it in Mallow by any chance?

No, not in Cork, got it from an independent multi brand dealer elsewhere.
Thanks for the advice, duly noted.
