1971 t100r restoration .

this might take a while as ive a few of my bikes vying for attention , the bsa b25 had the engine fully rebuilt , the triton just got 300 lids of clutch parts and i'm working on sorting engine plates , i finally sourced a rear subframe to convert the tr6 back to standard , ive been doing a bit with the fjs ,the 254 is almost there and starting to look well . this t100r was kinda getting left in the corner but a bit got mixed up with other bits and got cleaned up and sprayed and of course made the rest of it look like crap .
so ive jumped in there too .fecks sake ive enough projects to last me till i keel over lol .
anyway .. this t100r i bought around 7 years ago, it had been lying in a lads garden with a bollixed motor for decades. it came at reasonable money but lets face it i was most likely the onlt fool brave enough to take it on .
it started off like this ....

Re: 1971 t100r restoration .

so i fucked that motor back in and rode it very little as it was a mess, it became the norton jubilees mate...fucked in the corner. so i eventually pulled that motor out, started gathering up parts etc and stripped the motor to see what was needed , picked up some cases , got more parts , and got stuck into the engine build . crank journals (now end fed crank) ground and new shells put in , crank balanced, new t100c (no small end bush)conrods polished , rebore barells with thermal slot 8.5-1 pistons (with sharp edges removed ),new rings, new pushrod blocks and R followers , t100c camshafts , new main bearings , cam bushes, high gear bush, torrington bearing and roller bearings in gearbox , new clutch plates and springs, head skimmed, new valves with seats cut and valves ground in ,new small cases cleaned up , full gasket set with all seals , the list was feckin endless and it meant many a winters night spent assembling it all .ill get some build pics up later , for now here a vid of it in the still scruffy bike running with a mikuni carb .

That is a restoration well worth doing. Dublin Reg too ? Maybe you can connect it back to its original owner when finished .

Re: 1971 t100r restoration .

as can be seen , this motor was in a very bad state, the sludge trap was packed full so the big ends were starved of oil and needed a crank reground and new shells . this is quite common and i advise anyone buying a triumph to find out when it was done last and if not sure strip the engine . the sludge trap is a centrifugal particle trap within the crank itself . you really need an inline filter on the return (to oil tank) line on these old girls .

pics dddnt load, will redo later

What Triumph model is a T100R ? I have heard of a T100S,and a Daytona, but never anything with an R suffix.

Re: 1971 t100r restoration .

anyway...back to pics ....
the engine was in a very poor state , i think it may have been buried at some stage as there was a lot of bog in it lol. as mentioned already the big ends were shot, the sludge trap was packed , its a common cause for the demise of brit bikes like triumph 350/500/650/750 and many others. if ever thinking of buying one try find out when the sludge trap was done last . strippin the whole engine is the only way to clean it out.
first pic is the flathead you have to open to access the sludge trap. these are normally punched to bit to secure and are a bitch to open , drilling and chisels is common .i put an allen head in there instead, saves the bothers next time around . most will fit an oil filter on the return line to negate the need for all this but you still have to make sure its not full before you do that.
the big ends are fed through the right side of the crank, the oil has to flow through the sludge trap so a full or partial blocked trap starves the big ends . its common to see full traps in bikes lying up years .
second pi is the trap itself .

Re: 1971 t100r restoration .

Haven't been on here in a while, that's going to be a tidy bike when finished chopper. I really need to pull my finger out and make a start on that bundle of dung I have under the bench, that engine is even rougher than yours was!

Of course you may be passed it, but don't forget the output shaft seal when you have the clutch off.

Behind the clutch basket, behind the cover plate. Looks like any oil seal, with a spring on one side.

I had a 1967 t100. Pissing out gear oil, read that it was a common issue. When i inspected mine the seal was pretty much non-existent.

Comes out easy if you stick a self tapping screw in it, put vice grips on the screw, and pull it out gently.

You might want a impact screw driver to get the plate off, but it sounds you know more than I, so do what you think is right.
