Yeah and it was around a 100 at that, usual wacky Garda overestimate to make figures sound better.

But I have no doubt there probably is a stash of stolen motorcycles somewhere here in Ireland.

Allegedly they have run folks off the road and taken their bikes off them etc. There's something more menacing and sinister when it's this type of 'organised' crime rather than some junkie trying his luck. Gardai too busy protecting the White Collar criminals to bother helping the normal folks (well, as normal as cyclists can be).

Re: Containers full of bikes discovered ??

what a laugh... "no arrests have been made" !

ffs, you would think they could nail somebody for stashing 250k of stolen bicycles in a container in Newcastle, could they not put some sort of electronic surveilance, trace reg plate visiting etc.. usual story, nobody will be got for it and some fortunates will be pedalling around on unclaimed bikes.

I would assume its on someones property, so where's the problem tracing the person stashing stolen bikes

Surely you would notice someone planting a fecking great big shipping container on your property if it was not yours.
They should charge the property owner, they would soon tell the guards who was responsible if it wasnt them.

The whole system is screwed up, at most the property owner could be done for possession of stolen property but he could feign ignorance and worm his way out easy enough. They would have been better off building a case, if they didn't already.

Re: Containers full of bikes discovered ??

Ah yes there were 141 stolen pedalbikes in the container, so each was worth in excess of 1500 yoyos? The Shades cycling unit must have done the pricing on that; they're the lads and lassies who spent 70 grand on maintaining their own pedalbikes, at the rate of 80 euro per pedalbike per year for the last 5 years...

Was chatting a cyclist & his missus in a coffee shop one day during the summer.

His bike was worth 11k; 8k stock & he added special wheels & few other bits & bobs.

I wandered into a fancy nancy cycle shop in Ballymount one day whilst waiting for my yoke to be ready from M50 KTM. Carbon fibre framed stuff starting at 6K and rapidly heading up in price if you wanted to 'spec it up'. I suddenly didn't feel so guilty about spending a few hundred quid getting some bits for the Superduke!

Re: Containers full of bikes discovered ??

As a sometimes cyclist I think spending that kind of money on a bicycle is nuts. Lightweight super rigid carbon framed bikes ain't cheap You would want to be at a fairly high level of fitness to justify that outlay. Seen on facer( must be true so) that lad who won the lotto a while back spent 18k on a bicycle. Fairplay to him.
Having said that id spend 1.5k on a bike no problem. Good reason why me and the missus have separate bank accounts...

I bet 'his thing' is also lycra, and riding behind his mates so he can keep an eye on their lycra-clad arses.

I do a ton of mountain biking myself. Competed around Europe in the World Series etc. Its serious fun and the sport here in Ireland is exploding. Youre right though, the bikes are crazy money. Cant tell you how many times it kept me off the pints though due to races etc approaching. Not only is it serious fun, but its an investment in your own well being. Cant put a price on that

But 11k would buy you a fairly new bike and full gear, which is vastly more than what a carbon frame and 2 wheels is.
As you said its his/her thing and anyone can spend there money on whatever the fuck they want but 11k for a fuckin pushbike is just fuckin stupid if you ask me

Mate of mine (former 350LC Mondello legend, rebuilt a zx7 from a box of parts, spannerman for the swanton kids foray into pro racing) when he got older got into bicycling. Spent €6500 on this racing yoke that weighs the same as a snack box.
Told tales of 200km spins on a sunday morning, getting his heart rate up to 200bpm....

Madness I tell ya. Dangerous yokes them bicycles. Too fast and in a crash you have absolutely no protection......
