I doubt it was cheap even in that state considering the price they go for. I remember reading a thread from somebody who bought one back in the day and actually had the audacity to use it as a bike. He ran up 23000km in a couple of years on it and it needed an engine rebuild at that point. The parts alone cost 25k and he was lucky that all the work needed in the 2 years was covered under the warranty. He sold at the end. I think the average cost of the 7500 miles service is something like 5 grand!

They are a fine ornament for people who collect things like that and drive up the prices for themselves. Not much of an actual bike though. Not really any use on road or track.

Anyone splashing out on a desmodecci is not worried about parts or labour or any of that,it could literally shit itself every day of the week and they wouldn't care,I personally wouldn't mind one in me garage but I wouldn't have the luxury of throwing good money after bad and not caring unfortunately

I really hope they see this project through to the end. Don't give a bollix what folks say about the Desmo, to me it's pure bike porn. Would I buy one if I had the funds? I doubt it. But it's a bit like the Honda RC213V-S, MotoGP inspired tech but crazy price tag. Could you get something almost as fast for a fraction of the price? Definitely, but that's not the point, is it?

Re: Restoring a neglected Desmo!

the care they put in was mind numbing, still remember buying an old zxr4 a good few years back as a project and it turning up in the yard while i was at work and the first thing the father does is turn the key and press starter....... texted me that it didnt run then..... "that would be the dropped valve and holed piston then"

Image you bought that thing and then found that. You'd be sick. Goes to show a well used/cared for bike can actually be a better purchase.
