Default Crank Bolt Grade?

Sheared a crank bolt on the Z before I even got near the 18ft lbs.
I have four of them outside the casing that I need 'Shiney'

So
1. Stainless not hard enough
2. HT Cap screws are black, they'll rust over and they're ... not shiney
3. Got a few 8.8s Hex head zink coated, a bit meh, but I can polish them somewhat.

but spent too long sifting through bolts r us, amazon and about 1 in 15 searches that are not adverts ..with feck all info.

Are 8.8s strong enough ?
I have a thing in my head that the zink looks 'soft' 'cos I don't have a grade reference to go by and I'm not up on grades.
Anyone.?
(Its a crank, but not a truck)

I do think SS are OK for the casings though unless someone has a reasonable reason as to why not.

You could try JG Engineering,Goldenbridge Industrial Estate,Dublin. They carry a large stock of fasteners, etc. I found them helpful, and they will sell in small quantities, over the counter.

10.9 stainless should do the job. Most decent motor factors will have a wall of stuff to choose from.

Thanks.
Other end of the country.
Someone collected a few zinc ones for me today... 'Sorry don't have 50s, would 40s do..
Not sure do I want to chance their advice when they could have picked anything in the book longer than 50.
I'll call in, but would be good to pretend I know what I'm looking for grade wise and why I feel I shouldn't get them full thread.

Classic Z though, so I need hex
I can get them here, but still.. Grade.
If 10+ stainless will do, thats 100% as I can polish them.

But.. whats the standard / Typical Grade ? (Persistent ..)

So what's the alternate? You will get dissimilar metal corrosion everywhere on bikes. Steel bushes in aluminium frames, steel races in aluminium head stocks.

Heard that, done a bit of research a bit ago.
If there is more ally than SS, its fine.
Its fine anyways because this 'galv corrosion' is minimal with the ally anode being way bigger than the stainless cathode and sealed in.
Other reason is the ss crushes the ally thread and can pull the guts out.
only place i've ever heard of remote proof is ally rivets on ss plate.
the formula says no, but in reality and in my mediocre lifetime, ive never had an issue, I tend to put Cu grease in too. and it beats the shite out of rust & oxidization mix.
I'm calling 'important intelligent chemist who can study but can't do.
(Not you, and no offence...)

In fairness with your name im guessing that you know a bit about sealing connections against corrosion. I was in the don until a few years ago.

The standard on outer case bolts is al. Even anodised aluminium. 18 nm is about as much as a decent bolt would take. Steel Crank case bolts will be 8.8 or 10.9 standard. You could go to 12.9 if you wanted but it's unnecessary. They would be the long ones that go through the outer cases into the crank halves in most cases.

18ft lbs and it broke? Sorry that was a damaged reused bolt. Anything else new will do. Probably al previously over torqued.

Would titanium be a good substitute??
A bit of bling and enough tensile strength for brake caliper bolts so prob good enough for your job?
Plenty of suppliers on fleabay.
Stainless is a dose no matter what its used on. Threads just bind like a bitch.

Stainless raw will weld itself to throw alu threads.

You have to use copper slip with them
