Back to Biking

So bikers in England (not Scotland or Wales) can get out from today onwards provided you maintain your social distancing with no limit on miles.

While I agree with the lockdown completely (missus is a front line nurse)and tragically people have lost family members over this covid19, I would love to see some light at the end of the tunnel

When do you think realistically we'll be able to get some spins in?

Re: Back to Biking

I would say 18th May, the document says, beaches, car parks and public amenities will be open then, sports that can maintain social distancing will be allowed 4 people, so tennis golf etc. It says stay at home as much as you can, nothing about unnecessary journeys.

The full document says to continue to avoid unnecessary journeys up until 20th July

You could do a few PPE runs, or drop off drugs here and there.

The phases seem conflicting, phase 1 says beaches, open air shops like farmers markets, diy stores etc will all be allowed open. I assume you are allowed to travel past the 5k to go golfing etc. People who were within the 2 and 5 km limit were going to the beach anyway which I assume was allowed if within the distance as rte had people who were surfing etc on the news. So them saying the beaches are open I would assume means anyone can travel to them. Which in turn means I can hop on my bike and head to the beach or farmers market etc. I'll be back on the bike properly on the 18th anyway.

Caveat is, everything should be within 5km radius.

8th of June the radius would expand to 20km radius (if everything continues to go as planned).

20th of July we would be able to go outside the 20km limit.

Of course, you should still stay at home as much as possible but the same way you're allow to go for exercise or shopping, if going out with the bike is your way of clearing your head that to me falls under mental health to some extent, so if you stay within the rules above you should be OK.

Re: Back to Biking

Unless you cycle of course.

On the way home going through Glencullen, I must have counted about 50 lycra clad cyclists along the way.

That's a lot of cyclists getting exercise within the 5km limit of Glencullen. There's not that amount of people live there, never mind cyclists.

I've been out on the bicycle getting a bit of exercise over the past few weeks (I don't wear lycra), and guards never stop cyclists, only motor traffic. I guess the perception is that if you are cycling you are not going far, so no point in hassling cyclists.

Kind of moot point at this stage, but there you go anyway.

Re: Back to Biking

4 checkpoints from city centre out to Dun Laoghaire yesterday.
I big 1 at Ringsend.
Waved through each checkpoint by the very nice gardai.
No problems what so ever.
Sound bunch of lads n lasses they are.

Nice take away coffee from Insomnia too.

They're definitely stopping cyclists (some of 'em anyway), they tweeted about some eejit they found that cycled about 70kms from his house a while ago.

And that's it, I am hereby refusing to post, comment or otherwise get involved in ANY more posts about this fucking virus, done to death (pardon the deliberate pun).

Re: Back to Biking

If you have elderly family members you are allowed travel to assist them, regardless of distance. Since this started, I've been using my bike to check on the auld lad (naas to Tallaght and back) at least once a week. It's not a huge spin (or very exciting) about 60 clicks around.......but it's scratching the itch and keeping the battery charged.
