Default How often to you change bikes?

I bought an SV early last year after fooking ages off the road. Did my test on it and a few months later bought a z1000 (current bike). I love it I have to say, defo more than enough bike for me... but there's a little voice in the back of my head thats telling me to sell up and get something else.

I have no practical reason for doing this... just the absolute craic of a new toy.

I reckon if I arrived home on a s1000rr the missus wouldn't even notice (apart from my creamed pants)

Hi Colum,

GSX1400 and GTR1000

The gsx is a nice bike that i didnt need to do anything to but the gtr is one that I brought most of it home on the trailer, with other bits in the boot and the remains of the carbs in a biscuit tin on the passenger seat , most of my bikes fall in the latter category, still- its up and running now, just needs a new front tyre and a little tlc to make a nice tourer

Used to swap the main one every year and have one other to go with. Stopped when I got the R1 in 09. I had that until 2015 and got the 1199 then. I’ve had 3 Ktm’s in the same time. I reckon I’ll have the current two another while as there isn’t really anything else that will do what I want any better!
I’ll probanly add something (hopefully) rather than change

Why change a bike that you love?

May be you are not happy with the handling of a bike, maybe you are going to use your bike for a totally different purpose (instead of a weekend frill it becomes a commuter).

the real answer to the question is CAN YOU AFFORD TO CHANGE YOUR BIKE FOR SOMETHING BETTER. Not similar, or of a similar value unless the main purpose of owning a bike has changed.

At the end of the day 90% of us bikers cant use 30% of the capabilities of any bike.
So some guy won a TT on a certain bike, does that mean you are going to be better on a similar model. I seriously doubt it.

If you like a bike. are happy with the handling and running costs of that bike then why change it? replacing it with a newer model I can understand, but taking a gamble on a bike your have never rode in the hopes that its better seems stupid to me unless you had the chance to properly road test that model.

Im sure there are lads out there with there 1950's. 60's or 70's models just laughing at the stupid money being offered for old bikes that have been well cared for and maintained simply because they held on to an old bike that they loved and wouldnt change.

So the real question you have to ask yourself BEFORE looking at any bike is what are you unhappy about. What does your existing bike not do that another can. If you can answer that then absolutely look for a change of bike. If you have the surplus money to burn why not try a different bike. For most of use that's not a reality, personally I would sooner my old GSX 600F that been cared for and I love to something that on paper is supposed to be better.

If I ever won the lotto, or became rich enough to afford multiple bikes I wouldn't change my bike, but I certainly would be buying MORE bikes.

do it for the right reasons, not because its the 'in thing' or you want to be one of the 'boys'

Was doing a count recently and have had 18 bikes so far so that makes it 1.6 years for every bike. Have had 2 cages in the last 10 years so I know its an irrational impulse but as I say to herself its my only vice.
Think Im going to stick to the 3 I have now (cb, vfr750 and 125) but I still check out done deal most days (and if im in the mood for a laugh adverts) and deep down I know if something special came up I would be moving heaven and earth to get funds together.
For me part of the appeal is tinkering and I like nothing better than getting stuck into a good project (clutch master cylinder rebuild and setting up chancy young wan on the vfr) and if I had a brand new bike I wouldnt know what to do with myself over the long winter months...

pick a second bike up and change that every couple of months and keep the z1000. that way you can feed your addiction of buying something new every now and again
