Default Anyone know anything about this 'Blade?

Found this 1993 CBR900RR under the Christmas tree this morning - Santa finally opened my letter.

Click the image to open in full size.

The weird thing is its in a US-only colour scheme but it doesn't have any other signs of being a US bike. It was imported from the UK in 2007 and was registered there as K907 YFV which is a 1993 UK reg. I bought the bike from Meskells in Limerick - major props to Tom and Niall - great guys to deal with.

The bikes last registered owner lives outside Navan and the bike has a 93 LH Louth registration - maybe you know the bike or something about FireBlade colour schemes but I'd love to know a bit of it's history. There are signs of repairs to two of the fairing panels but I can't find evidence of a major rebuild or significant accident damage.

Cheers

'cptr

That's a lovely bike. Have you ridden it yet and if so what are your first impressions? Never seen one in the flesh before the NEC this year!

Probably my favourite bike of all time bar maybe the Ducati 916.

I got one around this time last year, 93 as well. Also a US import, mine was Californian though so had all the emissions deal on it.

For some reason there are a few of them around with US colour schemes.

IIRC Honda UK underestimated demand for the blade so dealers started bringing in bikes from other markets with odd colour schemes.
Hence the number of strange coloured bikes around.

The riding position is very odd. Feet up high, arms out, arse shoved back against the seat hump - modern sportsbikes have way better ergonomics. My first spin was my only spin so far, but 45 mins in the saddle and it felt like home. I thought my wrists would complain but the cold got to me first so I headed home.

The gearbox is typical of every 90s Honda - clunky and requiring positive input but feels unbreakable. Clutchless shifting is smooth but you have to apply firm pressure or you'll end up in a clanky false neutral panic. It needs a clutch cable, the action is heavy and slow but seems to come right once the bike is moving properly. I've been spoiled by years of hydraulic clutch actuation.

The star of the show is the midrange torque though. From a whiff above tickover the bike surges forward with the barest hint of an open throttle. In any of the top three gears it just aims for the horizon and fucks off if you bang the taps fully open - I took full advantage of the quiet roads yesterday and got myself addicted to the fierce acceleration.

The build quality is remarkable, the fairing is simple to remove and refit unlike a GSXR which is a mess of plastic rivets, twine and origami. I've ordered a full stainless exhaust - the original was hand painted at some point and looks cack.

Cheers Tom, many happy returns. It might be a keeper but its definitely the start of an obsession. I gave up my hunt for a 90s two-stroke to buy this - if the right yoke pops up the FirePlace will have to go...

For anyone interested in a bit of reading while you digest your turkey and ham, here is the Jalopnik article that started me looking at 1993 Fireblades

And his rebuild article

And his 'oops I bought another one' article.

Have a black 92....it's my go to bike in the shed, does everything well, actually surprised how well it commutes!! They like to pop fork seals, the charging system needs regular attention, fuel pump should be replaced to save road side assistance, and the suspension needs addressing after all these years but they are an amazing machine. Mine is dynojetted with a full period micron system so it's a little more raspy!

The chassis number should point you in the direction of origin. I've regularly seen 150mls before I got into reserve. There's definitely a few other things different on US spec models, think the indicators for one, your front fairing stay is alloy, which was the euro 94/95 model type, rearset healplates are not correct, and looks like foxeye forks, they should be bronze on early models

Cheers for all that. My fork seals look ok, the charging system is ok so far and the fuel pump is healthy but I'm on the hunt for a spare.

I was worried the bike was a Frankenstein but there is no evidence of it being pulled apart. The heel plates are early and the forks are early (No adjuster on the bottom of the legs) but the screen frame is later. The bike had a spill at some stage and the screen frame could have suffered and been replaced. Who knows - it's a really clean bike and it goes like a train so I'm going to enjoy it. Anyways I have axa breakdown cover...

Ah you can't blame me for being just a little curious. I got up this morning to a smell of petrol in the shed and signs of a fuel leak on #4 carb so it looks like this now. I am enjoying it!

you mean you have her clothes off and your diving in already before she has her feet under the table, great stuff , nothing like tearing into a bike to get to know it, you get to trust it much more and build a connection once you've had yer mitts on her oily bits.

taking a risk - but, smashing looking green thing there too.
