Re: Despatchin

Did it when I left college around 89, based around the West End in London...definately the best job I've ever had, thrashed the shit out of my lovely GS550... would I do it again? Not a chance in Hell

Yep, brings back memories although looks a whole lot better than it actually is when its pissin with rain. Addison Lee were one of the better outfits where you had the work to at least earn a few bob - if you could get into them - saw very few despatch riders over 40 though

True - remember the days when you couldnt bend your fingers after 10am. Long time before goretex!! not to mention all the offs because of mechanical failure (Chain coming off etc.,) rose tinted glasses are .... well rosy!!

The amount of times I went up and down that street! Saw the cops trying to chase a bike going on the opposite side of a traffic island - some chance in that traffic. Despatchin in Dublin is way easier than over there.

Re: Despatchin

I would date that as around 90-92.
At the time I was running round on a bright orange VT500 ( company bike )
Very handy , far better than the maggots,
Was a good time to be a DR. Money was there if ye were prepared to work for it. No GPS or PDAs/smartphones so the handy lads who had good street knowledge , knew how to use (and abuse) a open call circuit could do really well.
Still miss the buzz. Sometimes the best job in the world, 10 minutes later it could be the worse.
10 years of despatching as left me with a legacy of aches and pains , an intolerance of sitting in traffic and the ability to make fast safe progress through traffic.
Rode my Pan euro with a full touring load (not the best bike to hustle through the bottlenecks)through the centre of London last year at the height of the morning rush hour rather than plod round the M25 just for the buzz and the trip down memory lane - 10 years on and it felt like I had never been away.

I prefer to call it an "aggressive driving style" - once learnt in London - you can negotiate anywhere in the world

Would rather say "assertive" than aggressive.
True though, handle that , you can handle anything.
