I've been looking about at bikes between a 250 up to 600cc I'd be mostly useing it for work about 25 miles each way and then a few spins from Dublin to Carlow about 50 miles ones way would a 250 make that handy or would I need more power to make it comfy spin and fuel cost is their a huge difference between 250 or a 400

Fuel consumption isn't always proportional to engine capacity.
Some of the more efficient bikes like the Honda NC750 will be as good as or better than a typical 250-400cc bike. Some real world examples here: http://www.fuelly.com/motorcycle The default setting is for US units. |

best mpg i ever got was a zzr1100, worst fuel economy was my hornet 250.... hornet was high up in the rpm most of the time commuting around the zzr was at 4k when i was commuting, not all about engine size as said before. if you find something that does a steady speed that you like at a low rpm you'll get good mpg.

Best to look at the data for the bike.
My old bike was a Ducati S2R 800 My current bike is a Yamaha XSR700 Both have basically the same power output (about 75-80 bhp) The XSR gets way better mileage. Ducati gets 130km to a tank Yamaha gets 200km to a tank Same size tank. Even my R1 gets better mileage to the Monster. As people have said, the Honda NC700/750 is designed for fuel economy so it has great figures. I just refuse to drive a bike with that little bhp :) |
