the plastic gears can be replaced with steel gears for about 100 euro or so not sure about the motor, it's a mini lathe for small hobby type stuff i don't expect to make gearbox shafts with it
i was just asking if anyone here has bought one

Re: lathes

why buy one a them heaps of shite when you can get a good lathe for about 800yoyos, we got one last year, its an old myford 7, in excellent shape for 800, better than chinese shite anyday, my eldest lad went 1/2 share in it so it only cost me 400 plus we bought a few odds and sods for it since but maybe get a mate/brothe/uncle/sister?? to go shares, makes it cheap and its not as if youre gonna be using it all the time.

Re: lathes

Personally wouldnít be bothered with that shite havenít seen or used one in the flesh though but can imagine they are a waste of money. Can only judge by other equipment that Iíve seen coming from that neck of the woods. On the safety side the 550w motor would stop if you got tangled up in it

Re: lathes

The other thing lads forget is the cost of tooling. You need to spend about another grand to really get the use out of it.
On my list of must haves for any lathe is a set of indexable tool holders, about €200 with a few small inserts. A revolving centre, a quick change toolpost and holders and a four independent jaw chuck would follow closely behind. A collet chuck is very handy too.
Bear all that in mind and a second hand myford 7 or similar with some tooling really starts to make sense.
I have two lathes, a storebro gs210 800x2000for the heavy work and a small optimum 140x550 for handy jobs. For a home lathe the optimum is a nice piece of kit.

Re: lathes

I was considering one of them mini lathes too but decided a tig welder was more urgent. There are some very good youtube vids of lads that use them for all sorts of metal work and have modified them to reduce chatter and improve precission. If you didnt mind a project to fix all its quirks before use, they might be worth it depending on what your gonna be using it for.

Seriously though, it would be like buying a Chinese bike, and the same rules apply. You'd be far better off paying a bit extra for a decent used lathe than buying that shite. It'll be made from recycled bean cans.
Spend a few extra yoyos and buy yourself a boxford or myford or something similar.
