Default Paddy's on Tour 2018

Just finished a write up of a trip to Europe we did last August. It's not short, so, if you're particularly bored or have lots of spare time...pop on the kettle and get comfortably seated

Lol, yer making me hungry just mentioning the words!!

Here's a breakdown of the costs - these are estimates from before the trip, but should be fairly accurate. Probably spent more on juice in the end, and maybe a bit less than 60/day on accommodation so it should all balance out...

Bike Transport 1 x bike @625 = 625
Flights 1 x flights @80 = 80
Travel Insurance @42 = 42
Accommodation 14 nights @ 60/night = 840
Food&Drink 14 days @ 50/day = 700
Tolls 6 passes @20/pass = 120
Fuel 14 days @30/day = 420

Total = 2,827

Everything was pre-booked via booking.com as we were a group of 8, tricky to find a place to stay on spec with that many peeps. You could reduce costs considerably by camping instead of hotel/B&B. Total distance covered was 2.5k kms

TBH, I think that ended up being a bit higher - there were definitely days where we tanked up more than once. Ballpark distances were 300km/day. That said we had a few rest days where we spent two nights in the one spot and the bikes sat still.

That's really good for 14 nights in hotels overall, did all those have secure parking or were you out of the way in some places so it wasn't too much of a concern?

Actual cost per night averaged out at 56 euro pp, which isn't bad for the time of year we were there.

Everywhere we stayed had dedicated parking (some fully secure, some not) bar one spot - but it was so out of the way it was fine. When we stayed in Trento (two nights), the bikes were in an underground locked carpark - necessary as the hotel was very central.

Savage trip & the cost wasn't too bad considering what you got out of it. I'd love to do that sort of trip sometime

I know it's been said before, but the best thing to do is just bite the bullet and go. Even if it means taking a few quid out of the Credit Union or something like that. For me, that was a trip of a lifetime - went places and enjoyed roads I'd only dreamed of up till then. Hopefully I'll manage a few more 'trips of a lifetime' in the coming years!

2020 would sound good for me planning wise. Could it be done on a supersports kitted out with luggage or need an adventure bike?

One of our group was on an S1000RR and he was grand. No needs for an adventure bike to do a trip like this. Sure the roads in Europe are ten times better than what we have over here!
