Ya, it was a nice surprise ahead of the Irish Photo Rally launch next weekend.

Re: IBA Photo Rally 2018

My apologies as I didmt see your recent posts until just now John, yea, was at the photorally night and got distracted by a right hoor on Saturday and took off to lough Corrib to an old photorally shot via the river Suck, failed to make it on the way up Friday but God loves a trier so got it on Saturday, here's my 4 so far...

No weather for bikes today, started out at 1c and didn't get much warmer, snow, hail and thunder was enough to keep Flymo under lock & key

Good Job!
we couldn't get near the Suck bridge Saturday. But we could see it ahead even though we ran out of road.
well done for getting up to it.

Re: IBA Photo Rally 2018

Ignore whereby says road flooded and continue straight on up the track, take the next two turns right and the next left, this will take you to the other side of that flooded road and onto the bridge, this bridge is a replacement for the very old timber one that was an Irish photorally shot a good few years back, it would have been very risky to take your bike across that one as many of the planks were decayed.

Re: IBA Photo Rally 2018

I have signed up for this, but one thing I am unsure of is: the GPS cordinates, they look like they are in decimal but on my sat nav, it gives several options for format, I mean about 20 odd. Are the points in Irish or UK decimal, or is there any difference at all.

they are in degrees north and west

So for the Suck bridge for instance
53.432028, -8.263216 (the decimal is fraction of minutes , GPS coords are in the format of Degrees, minutes, seconds)
means
5325'55.3"N 815'47.6"W

Even easier for you is simply paste 53.432028, -8.263216 into google maps and it will show you the exact position.

On the IBA Photo rally site you can download a GPX file. This can be loaded directly into your g.p.s. device. Sorry but you'll have to read your instructions for that, it tends to be different for different makes.

Re: IBA Photo Rally 2018

Didn't notice you there John, very successful meet, also got Clonegal done, few photorally ones also, great weekend for biking but back to normal weather today.
Chris was saying that he might limit the numbers of entrants to 65 this year, it's really taken off, 55 have signed up so far...

Re: IBA Photo Rally 2018

Took the Glide for a long spin north and collected a few photos along the way:

9/15 Tarsaghaun Mayo

10/15 Blackwater

11/15 Near Butlers Bridge

12/15 Molerick

That last one was getting dark, so some fiddling with phone settings was required to see the bridge and bike in the same photo.

Also, how come the same 50 yards of road shares an Irish Photo Rally point and an IBA point? coincidence?

Iron Butt Advice

How'yiz,

Thinking of doing the Iron Butt Circuit of Ireland soon.

Looking for advice on routing.

I would be starting up North, I'm in Lisburn. So hitting Ballycastle would be handiest for me first.

I'm planning to head off around 4am... Anyone know if there's a 24 hour garage in Ballycastle for a fuel receipt?

Any other tips on record/receipt keeping would be appreciated.

Cheers

If you use Google Maps on Android check out the "your timeline" to see where you have been. Frightening what they monitor without you knowing!! Might also work on Apple.

Did it a couple of years ago, what time of the year are you thinking? I did it in June - long days short night, but lots of bugs at night. So bring wipes for visor for night bugs. Getting petrol stations at night is the key - you probably only need a couple but make sure they are open or at least are 24 hour credit card types. Also in the early morning be very aware of animals in the road - I had a couple of scares and then decided that the best option was to tuck in behind a cage even though it was slower and the driver might have had a couple on board..

You will also need a witness at the start and end to sign off your departure and arrival back home so you will need to find someone at the time you depart and return..

I just did it cos the weather was nice - it was a bank holiday weekend and I wanted to burn off a couple of tyres I didn't like - have to say I was bollixed tired after it..

Good luck with it..

Yep, the Beemer seems a good steed for that sorta spin. I've done some long days in the saddle going down thru France so once I get wrapped up properly and the weather's not horrendous, should be grand.
