Arrow Phillip McCallen announces plans to stage worlds biggest display of Joey Dunlop bikes

Irish road racing legend Phillip McCallen is on a mission to stage the world’s biggest collection of Joey Dunlop race bikes at the inaugural Classic Bike Festival Ireland in August.

The event, showcasing classic racing motorcycles and starring some of the top riders past and present, will be held at Bishopscourt in County Down on August 4.

Multiple North West 200, Isle of Man TT and Ulster Grand Prix winner McCallen was inspired to host a major classic bike festival in Northern Ireland following the success of similar events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed and the Festival of Jurby on the Isle of Man.

The Portadown man says it’s all systems go for the summer spectacular after receiving the green light to press ahead with the event, and McCallen is determined to bring together the biggest collection of Joey Dunlop machines ever seen at one time.
“One of the exciting things we do want to do – and we’re well on the way at the minute – is to put the biggest collection of Joey Dunlop bikes in the world in one place at one time,” McCallen said.

“We’re hoping to put those bikes together in one of the greatest displays ever of Joey Dunlop bikes. Also, we hope that the bikes that are still running will also do parade laps.

“I am still a very big fan of Joey Dunlop’s and I’ve already had a talk and a meeting with Gary Dunlop - who is looking after all his father’s bikes and doing all the presentations now - so Gary is coming along to support this event.”

Providing the latest update on plans for the festival, McCallen said: “We’ve been waiting a long time for a Classic bike festival in Ireland and we’ve got them all over the world with Goodwood, Jurby on the Isle of Man, the Festival of 1000 Bikes; so everyone has got one, but we here in Northern Ireland and Ireland probably have one of the best collections of bikes in the world.

“We’ve got historic bikes, famous bikes, Joey Dunlop bikes, Tom Herron bikes and many, many more.

“So someone had to put an event together to get them out and I’ve teamed up with a partner and we’ve created a club to do that.

“It’s so exciting that the permit has been issued and the event is now going full speed ahead. In another couple of weeks, entries and regulations will be out so if the amount of interest so far turns into entries, then we’re going to have a great field.”
McCallen is also working behind the scenes to bring in a leading rider to be an ambassador for the festival and hopes to be able to make an announcement soon.

“I work with a lot of famous riders who I’m talking to at the minute and I can’t confirm names at the moment – I would love to – but there are dates and clashes, although I am talking to three or four top guys at the moment who would be ambassadors for this event,”
“Hopefully in the next four or five weeks we will have that person confirmed.

“At the moment the event is going to be on August 4, but with the amount of interest we are seeing, we may change it to a two-day event when the entries come in.”

Great news and well needed, Philip indicated he will attend the VJMC show on 5th May, so that would be great to promote this other classic event and have Philip present in some capacity as a bike shop or just to promote his classic race festival, all good

Our club, the Ulster Lambretta Club, have got our name down for a display stand so you can come along and admire some old Italian grannys' shopping mopeds once you're bored with all that fast stuff.

Phillip McCallen’s inaugural Classic Bike Festival Ireland at Bishopscourt in Co. Down (August 3-4) will be sponsored by Go.

The festival has been expanded to two days such has been the level of interest since former road racing star McCallen announced plans for the summer extravaganza.

Over 400 classic and vintage road and racing motorcycles dating from the 1930s to the 1990s are anticipated, including the largest collection of Joey Dunlop’s race bikes ever assembled.

The Dunlop family will also exhibit the full collection of Joey’s race memorabilia, including his helmets, leathers, trophies and toolbox of the legendary Ballymoney racer.

Go, which is already involved in two-wheel sport through its support of the McAdoo Kawasaki Racing team since 2007, will be the title sponsor of the new classic motorcycle festival, which is being organised by 11 times TT winner McCallen and co-promoter Robin Titterington.

McCallen said he hoped the event would become the ‘Goodwood Festival’ of Northern Ireland.

“The Classic Bike Festival Ireland is a new initiative for this part of the world and we hope to make it as popular an event as the Goodwood or Jurby festivals,” he said.

“Go is the perfect partner for the Festival and their range of services in fuel, electricity and gas will appeal to the thousands of spectators and competitors who will attend the event.”
Patrick Kelly from Go said: "Go are very proud to be the title sponsor of the inaugural Classic Bike Festival Ireland and as fans of classic motorsport, getting involved really was a no-brainer for us.

"Go are now one of the main fuel networks in Ireland with over 50 24-hr forecourts and is also one of the leading electricity and gas suppliers to businesses, we have experienced rapid growth since launching into the commercial market across Ireland.

"We have further expansion plans to open more forecourts and later this year we will begin supplying electricity direct to the domestic customer. Go sees the attention the Classic Bike Ireland Festival will provide as the perfect vehicle to broaden our company’s exposure."
There will also be special displays of race bikes and memorabilia of Grand Prix legend Tom Herron, who lost his life in a crash at the North West 200 40 years ago.

Machinery ridden by the two famous road racing quartets of the 1970s – the Armoy Armada and Dromara Destroyers – will also be on display.
