Default McGuinness suffers fitness 'setback' as TT clock ticks down

John McGuinness’ hopes of returning to racing at the 2018 Isle of Man TT Races are in doubt once more with the 23-time winner revealing he’s suffered a setback in his recovery from a badly broken leg.

Click the image to open in full size.

The Morecambe Missile sustained a compound fracture of his tibia and fibia and lost 50mm of bone at last year’s North West 200 in May. The 140mph crash, caused by a technical issue with the Honda Fireblade’s ECU, resulted in McGuinness being fitted with an external fixator for nine months.

The cage was removed at the beginning of March with the bone having successfully grown and McGuinness was given the go-ahead that the leg could be full-weight bearing again whilst he was at the official TT launch on the 21st March.

However, in a short posting on his Twitter page on Wednesday evening, he stated ‘Not sure what to sa. Unfortunately my leg has had a bit of a setback, sorry not said soone. I’ve just been trying to get my head around it all first. To say I’m gutted is an understatement.’

McGuinness is due to campaign Norton’s SG7 in both the Superbike and Senior races whilst recent deals had also seen him secure rides with Ryan Farquhar’s KMR Kawasaki team for the Lightweight race and Michael Dunlop’s MD Racing squad for the two Supersport encounters.

It’s not known at this stage what the extent of the set back is and if McGuinness will definitely be ruled out of the action around the Mountain Course.

Practice for the North West 200 gets underway in just over a month.

Wasn't expecting to see him or hutchy race this year.
Even with all the talk about kmr and MD racing.

Although we all love to see these guys in action, McG and Anstey are getting on a bit. It's great that they live to tell the tales. Hutchy at least has a bit of time on his side for the future, but it's time for the likes of Hickman, Kneen and Harrison to shine and best of luck to them too... always great to see these guys in action.

Wonder will Rutter do anything this year?

Birchall boys for the sidecars again??

I don't think Peter Hickman will make it easy for him.
Dean Harrisson in the mix too.

That's a damn shame - but understandable. Better to let the healing process complete, than to rush it

Something tells me he rushed it with the Physio to be in time for the TT and put too much effort on the break, causing it to fracture again, he might get out at the Manx though.

That's what I was thinking too, but infection can set in too.
He's had the cage for the guts of 10 months. "Speedy" recovery either way.

Met him at the bike show in Cork a real gentleman and time to talk to everyone. While walking by our bike he hit his cage / leg off one of the fairing hangers only barely and nearly went to the ground with the pain. I was thinking if he can ride a TT the man must be a robot. He'll be a big loss.

Sad news for fans but isn't it amazing that the bone can grow back Did he have 5cm removed and did that literally regrow or is there a splint put in around which the bone grows?
