Default Brands BSB: Brookes hits out at 2018 tyre changes

Josh Brookes has revealed the new tyres that series supplier Pirelli has provided this season are hindering his team’s progress as he continues his fight to find the podium.

The McAMS Yamaha rider had a trying first round at Donington, but today fought from 17th on the grid before the red-flagged-restart to fifth at the chequered flag.

And while last year’s championship runner-up says his positive progress with bike setup was perhaps magnified by the wet weather, he knows he should be on the rostrum.

“We made some progress this morning after some significant changes overnight with the bike,” he told Bikesport News. “It wasn’t a light-switch moment, but it’s like the rest of the weekend where we’re just chipping away.

“We made some changes from that but unfortunately for race one it was a negative step. So for race two we put the bike back to morning warm-up settings and I felt like it was a step forward.

“Even before the red flat and the weather I was up to 11th. For a million dollars I couldn’t have got to eleventh in race one… it was impossible.

“The wet weather magnified the improvements we had made and the progress was more visible.”

But the 2015 champion admits the rubber Pirelli has brought to the table this season has hindered him this season, and says he’s not the only one.

“There’s a lot of talk around the paddock and it’s no secret that people are having difficult times adjusting to the new tyre.

“Not being told that the tyre is a new generation one, we all assumed and went out on our old settings and thought, ‘well why aren’t they working?’

“For me it’s like I’ve come to a new team so I’m thinking, ‘maybe it’s the team, maybe it’s the bike, maybe it’s me, maybe it’s the tyre’. It’s not until you hear those whispers around the paddock that you realise why everything’s stopped working.

“The new tyre Pirelli has brought in has had more of a negative effect on us than others. I think I’ve been on the receiving end of the bad side where the bike maybe doesn’t work that well with this new generation of tyre.

“Certain changes of tyre affects everybody, whether it’s World Superbikes or MotoGP – certain riding styles, certain bikes and certain riding characteristics are affected differently.

“I feel like that’s where the wheels have come off the cart for us, and now we’ve got a better understanding of actually it’s the tyre that we have to focus on. I’m not meant to be P15, I’m meant to be a top podium finisher.”

irish road races flag Brands BSB: ‘gutted to finish second’ – Glen Irwin

Glenn Irwin has admitted his disappointment at missing out on the win by such a close margin as he fell victim to a last-minute pass for victory by race winner Leon Haslam.

The Be Wiser Ducati rider revealed he didn’t initially believe he had the speed to run with early race leader Michael Laverty, but says a pass on team-mate Shane Byrne gave him the confidence he needed.

But Irwin also admitted he was conscious that a runner-up points haul could all be lost if he made the wrong move for the lead.

“When [Michael] went by, his pace was pretty phenomenal, much stronger than all of us,” he said. “I thought, ‘wow, he’s checking out, this is going to be a scrap for second or third.’

“But I began to realise I had pace when my team mate passed me twice and I managed to get him back and then Leon and Michael.

“It’s gutting to finish second… I’ll always fight to the last thing and I know Leon would as well. I tried everything to prevent him being able to do the move he did, and he did overdo it a little bit and I thought about a do-or-die.

“But there’s fighting ‘til the end and then there’s being a complete wingnut, and that’s what I didn’t want to be. So 20 points is good and more importantly the showdown credits are what we wanted to collect.

Default Brands BSB: Bridewell scores on ?glorified Superstock bike??

Halsall Racing’s Tommy Bridewell bagged a brace of top-ten finishes at the Bennetts British Superbike round this weekend on what he described as a ‘glorified Superstock bike’.

The West Country rider lined up sixth on the grid for Sunday’s first race. Despite losing a few places at the start, he settled into ninth position and held the spot to the chequered flag.

His best lap in the opening race gave him a seventh place starting spot for race two later in the afternoon. After a dry race one, the weather had always been set to turn for the second, and true to form the rain hit six laps in, forcing a restart over 22 laps, with the riders lining up in the order they’d been in when the race was stopped.

From 10th on the grid, Bridewell got another good start and moved up to eighth as the weather worsened, but was able to stick it out until the end to bag his second top 10.

“Overall it has been quite a positive weekend for me, the improvement we’ve made since Donington is clear for all to see so I am happy with two top 10s,” said Bridewell.

“But we still have a long way to go and a lot of work to do. Realistically, this is just a glorified Superstock bike with Superbike suspension, brakes and electronics, and we’ve already come quite a way with it since round one.

“Obviously we want to be finishing higher than eighth and ninth but we’re definitely moving in the right direction. We expect to be in a much stronger position by Oulton Park in a few weeks, and I’d like to thank the team for working so hard this weekend.”

Default Brands BSB: O?Halloran gets title challenge on track

Click the image to open in full size.

Honda Racing’s Jason O’Halloran got his 2018 Bennetts British Superbike title challenge on track at Brands Hatch with a podium finish in race one.

The Australian, who was flying solo as a result of Dan Linfoot’s crash in free practice, caught and passed Leon Haslam in the dying laps to bag 16 points for third place behind Shane Byrne and Bradley Ray, but a wrong tyre choice in the wet second outing saw O’Halloran retire.

“Race one was fantastic, we came from the third row and it’s always really tough to pass here. I made some good passes with the Fireblade and moved forward the whole race to finish on the podium. Not only did we catch Haslam, but passed him and held him off. He’s one of the strongest guys in the championship, so to pass him we’re making progress,” said O’Halloran.

“I felt that I had the same pace as the leaders but starting on the third row hurt us, especially with the battles I had coming through to get to the podium. I’m really pleased with the CBR, we made some adjustments over the weekend which had a really positive effect and I am feeling much more comfortable and happy with the progress we’re making. Race two started well for us in the dry conditions, it was spitting with rain but it wasn’t too bad I didn’t think.

“I got a bad start and was run wide at turn one, around here the lap time is so close and when you feel that you’ve got more than the people around you, it’s a nice feeling. I passed Shakey, Cooper and got up into fifth and thought ‘I’m in a great place this early, just keep doing your thing and keep moving forward!’.

“The race was red flagged and we went with a wrong tyre choice in the second part, choosing a rear intermediate tyre. When I rolled out of pit lane I thought ‘great we’re on!’ The track wasn’t too wet, it was damp and I felt like we’d made the right choice, but it just kept raining and the heavier the rain got the worse it got, I had no traction and was spinning hard, I stayed out for as long as I could, but in the end it was safer to pit.

“I’m now turning my attention to Oulton Park; we have a test coming up so for us that is going to be fantastic, hopefully we get some decent weather. We have some ideas from what we’ve learnt this weekend and a few things we’ve been planning to try over the last few weeks but haven’t been able to with the weather. So yeah, I’m looking forward to the test day and love racing at Oulton!”
