R&G crash protection vs the rest ...

Hi all,

Just replaced my 09 GSX650F with a 161 GSX-S 1000F, happy new bike day to me !!!

Have planned a few small mods, but would like to start with investing in some crash protection.

I'm sure this thread has popped up before, but has anyone ever purchased and fitted anything that wasn't provided by R&G?

R&G doesn't seem overly priced, when comparing to some of the European stuff.

However, there seems to be some great value out there from the Chinese market. Thoughts ???

What if your bike falls over and the crash protection doesn’t protect? You’ll need to replace fairings...and your scratched up protection.

With the price of bungs and casing etc protection. There’s an argument for having none on.

Go on to eBay UK.
Look up JayBee Biker Bits
He's an engineer in the UK who makes crash protection up for all sorts of bikes.
Alot cheaper than R&G but just as good.

or if the bung that is mounted using an engine mount / through the engine casing snags something as the bike slides down the road, and breaks a piece out of the engine casing?

Well if you want to instead of the engine bolt type of crash bungs,, you can fit crash bungs that go Right through the frame itself and through the front forks and rear swingarm.
R&G make them as does JayBee.

Then to compliment that,fit R&G or GB Racing engine casing covers. Woodcraft make them too.

So if you do go down,the casings,front brakes/forks and rear swingarm/rear brake are all still protected.....and hopefully you can still nurse the bike home with the vitals intact.

Crash bungs on the road is a catch 22.
Damned if you do and damned if you don't.
If you have a slow speed slide and don't hit a kerb or ditch....they are a god send.
If you have a high speed off and clip a kerb or ditch or grass verge.....well the bike will flip over and over when the bungs catch off said obstructions.


So basicly you pay you money and take your choice.....or not.

Ironicly as this thread was posted yesterday....Andrew Brady had an off on his race bike at the weekend.
Cracked S1000rr frame because the impact caused the mushroom bolt to squash in on the frame,thus cracking it........

Each to their own but I wouldn't put them near a bike. I've seen too many with broken frames and engine mounts because of crash bungs, even after a fairly low speed off. So instead of replacing a fairing, a mirror and an engine casing, the bike ends up scrapped.

I've had the misfortune of testing both R&G and Chinese bungs fitted to the R&G mounts and the R&G were far better. The Nylon or Delrin these are made of needs to wear down during a slide. The R&G did wear through the slide. The Chinese ones I had cracked off during a slide and snagged the mounting bolt. This was on an SV650 and the R&G kit mounts to multiple points instead of a single bolt. Personally, I think this is a much better design. The alu mount that came with the R&G would not allow for a mushroom to fold into the frame. Dont know if all kits are like this but it certainly worked well.
What negates them both is the speed and objects hit. They only work up to 30Kph or there abouts Id say. Anything more or any ping pong between obstacles and your screwed

The r&g are not immune to bending either,but they’ll take a reasonable hit and they’ll slide for days...if money allows and they have a listing the Gilles ones are about the best I’ve seen,they’re anchored really well and the fit and finish is brilliant,there’s also a sprung at the ends for light impacts.

The Chinsy stuff is best avoided,for multiple reasons. Mostly because I’m the event of a spill there’s a good chance your bike will have less damage then if they’re fitted😂
