Thanks for the clarification Tony.
What about after passing my A driving test will I still have to wait the 2 years before I can carry a pillion passenger?

Re: Updates for driving tests and learner permits 2013

Well Tony,

if you have answered this, sorry for asking it again! My bro has just sent me on this email wondering what the craic is with the followng

[--
Question: If I hold a category A Learner Permit issued before 6 December 2010 and now want to do a category A1 driving test, do I need to do IBT?

RSA Answer: No, the Learner Permit for licence category A exempts you, as you held it before 6 December 2010.

Taken from: http://www.rsa.ie/en/RSA/Learner-Dri...ked-questions/
--]

Based on this, he wants to know if he passes his test, does he get a Full Unrestricted A licence? (I think he'll get an A2 licence)

Ok looking at your post there seems to be confusion on your bro,s part.

The A1 learner permit is for 125,s

I assume your bro means the A (25kws) learner permit

So if this is the case and your bro has in fact the A learner permit obtained before dec 6th 2010 then when he does the the test he will be issued the A2 licence.

However if he is over 24 he has the option to change his learner permit for the new A unrestricted then do a full IBT then when he passes his test he will obtain a full A unrestricted..

In either case he has to do a full IBT to obtain his full A unrestricted licence.

If he goes the A2 route he will stay on the A2 indefinatly.(the automatic lifting of the restriction after 2 years no longer happens)

The only way to get the A unrestricted is to do the IBT.

So if hes over 24 he can do it now(before the test) or he is just kicking the can down the road and have to do it anyway to obtain the full A

Basically any one on a learner permit(issued after 1999) now has to do IBT to obtain the full A
If he is under 24 he cant obtain the full A he will be issued the A2 regardless if he did the IBT or not

Fraid it does.

No L plates, no L tabbard (vest) is the same thing and the six moths ban applies for any learner permit holder.

So if for example you are on a learner permit and you are stopped with no IBT cert thats a mandatory court apperance (5 points) keep in mind if you get one more point you will be banned
Now if in addation you wernt wearing your L tabbard which will also carry points
you could be in a world of shit

The law will change later this year.

In the fourth Eu licence directive also heard rumors of restricted engine size and limiting the number of occupants in the cage.

If you have a full A licence then the new laws do not affect you.

Unless you are over 24 and want to shortcut your 2 year restriction

But will law apply retrospectively? Surely not..as if a learner has 7points now, they will automatically be banned when the new law comes in..

If some one has a learner permits with 7 points already, they really need a reality check (kick in the bollix)in relation to their riding habits.

I dont know if the points will count retrospectively but i would say that all will become clear closer to the date the law is enacted.

An A2 is for life, not just for Christmas

If you pass your test, and get a full A2 licence - you have an A2 licence (just like if you passed an A1 test last year, you'd have an A1 licence)

The only way now, to get an unrestricted A is to do the "Module 5" conversion course (and any IBT you haven't already done!). You'll be doing that regardless of which way you decide to "upgrade" (if you do), otherwise you're limited to 35kW etc for life !!

(Note: the training-only upgrade is only available once you've had the A2 for two full years)

Yep - that's the way it is ...

Plan B - if you're over 24, is to go straight to unrestricted A (Direct Access), which involves the shedload of IBT up front, but no restriction !

If you've never done IBT - you're talking about 18 hours over 3 days

If it's the "conversion module" only, you're talking 11-13 hours ... reckon about 30/hour for IBT, add a chunk if you need to borrow a bike

You'll end up having to do it sooner or later to get an unrestricted licence though - so start savin'

Re: Updates for driving tests and learner permits 2013

Hes over 24, re apply for the new A unrestricted learner permit do the IBT and he can ride what he wants no restrictions.

Once he gets the new A unrestricted he has to do the IBT before he rides a bike on a public road.

The old A restricted permit that he got in nov 2010 dosent exist anymore
