Default white metaling old conrods

thought id do a little write up on this as it is a dying art .
for those not up on white metalling rods its basically from pre 50s in motorbike terms , my tiger 100 is 51 (first of the all alloy motors)and instead of big end shells it has a durillium (hindium) rod machined to the journal and a steel con rod cap bolted underneath .the space between the cap and journal is taken up with white metal which is poured in and bored out to spec .
it was all well and good while it was common but these days its very rare to find anyone doing it .
first off is removing the old white metal

the caps must be leaded next to get the metal to stick
hopefully the pic attached
next is making the little jig to hold the caps together for pouring .

back in a bit

so after the jig is made up you have to seal the caps in with fire clay and strips of aluminium so the white metal doesnt pour out .its expensive stuff loike!
then you heat the metal and also the jig/rod caps , when the temperature is right you pour the metal in and poke it a bit to get air out .
after that it get let cool while you have tea .

tea was lovely :-) . after a bit of cleaning up the cap is bolted back onto the rod and its set up in the rod machine to get bored out to the right size to suit the crank journal . very time consuming stuff indeed.

poxy pics keep fuckin up.ill fix this later.grrrr

Fair play chopper, its nearly a lost art, knew a guy in engerland used to do it for prewar unmentionables, twas a common job one time but like evrything else its being forgotten about in this age of disposability, if you offered that service through the vintage clubs id say you get a bit of business out of it.
Great to see someone learning the older skills tho, ffs theres lads n here never even seen a set of points never mind know how to set em,

well its for some of a bike .its for my triton project .its a 1951 tiger 100 engine (pre unit) , the first of the all alloy engines .it used to be raced on dope .it has the r followers and race cams . the motor was fairly rough but its getting there .its a labour of love . i have a slimline featherbed frame to put it into but not much else at the mo .
too many projects and too many kids means progress is slow

I doubt it as I can`t think of one vintage motor cycle with ``white metal```bearings, you need a high pressure oil system for plain bearings which was not a vintage strong point. Roller bigends can run on very little oil at no pressure.

It phased out in the early 50s really but theres a lot of old bikes like the triumphs were done like this . You can convert them to shells although its expensive .its still big in the old cages world though .rollers and the like .mega bucks to do them .I done mine msinly to learn a dying skill . Theres only one lad I know of in ireland that does them and he is not in great health .while I was there a guy came from uk to collect his RR crank and rods.
