Annual plates in da States, sure weren't they made in prisons in the past?

AFAIK they're still made in prison, new "tags" every year, if you don't bother or forget to declare it off the road, it builds up and will leave something worthless within a few years as the debt follows the vehicle. I bought an old KLX250 in boxes for less than $250 and had to pay over $800 to get it legal to ride anywhere other than public land!

Incorrect, "tags" are not made in prison. The tag is just a small sticker that afixes to the number plate, which may or may not be made in prison. The tag is the equivalent of your tax disc as pointed out above. The plates themselves stay with the vehicle as long as you want it to . Number Plates are not assigned to a vehicle on initial registration like there. I have had different plates ( numbers never the same) on my bikes as they change every few years. ( new designs etc )

The thing about being off road varies from state to state. Here in OH if you dont tax your bike for 13 months. All you have to do is get a new plate ( $5) and pay the current tags ( OH its $35/year). It does vary from state to state

Similar system in Canada. My plate comes with me if I get a new bike. Also, $80/year for registration and you get a new 'tag' to stick over the old one.

That tucked-in look is guaranteed to get a bit of 'attention,' though. It's fairly taking the piss!

Sorry - meant the plates were still made in prison. The tag setup works well in Cali, you can spot them easily on the road and because the system is pretty watertight (from the authorities pov at least) the CHP tend to be OK if you're late getting the tags on. Brought my plate with me when I brought my yoke back. Nice decoration......:smileee:
