About 30% of all bikes on the road in Ireland are Honda's

2019 vehicle stats

42,292 taxed bikes in 2019. Up over 4,000 from 2015.

Over 12,000 of them are Honda's. BMW in second with about 5,000.

Didn't think the number of bikes on the road was going up

Amazing that Danfay are still in business with no Yammys taxed !! Presumably Triumph, Suzuki and Yamaha make up the shortfall of 16,928 bikes

Those 71 Hyosun owners- scratching their heads now. I'm sure its either a typo on the records or the typo is on the bikes.

The majority of them are registered in Dublin. More than likely all scooters/mopeds.
They are the worst ball of shite I have ever had the misfortune of riding.

I'm shocked that there are double the motorcycles on the road now than there was in the 80s. One would expect that between insurance, H&S and red tape more would have been driven off the road.
Then again, there is an amount of foreign lads who love their bikes living here now. Back in 1990, there was one black man in CIT, and people in cork knew of a Czech family who had moved there in the 60s. That was it really.
Great to see.
I remember giving a talk on this topic in 1994, and pointing out how at the time, Leitrim had more tractors than motorcycles.

That's it in a nutshell.
When I started biking if someone had tax on their bike you knew he had come in to a few pound.:thumbsup2:

this is exactly the point...think the first tax disc I got was for my first 'big' bike
Loads of GP100s, RX100s etc flaking around without a disc between them

I think if you look at the ever-increasing age profile of bike owners these days you may find at least part of the answer there. More & more bikers belong in the 'responsible citizen' age group nowadays when compared with the days of yore. All I can say is that when I was a teenager the fact that a bike wasn't taxed didn't stop you from riding it. Also, the days of being told by a Guard "If I see you on the road with that fucking thing again I'll take it off you" are long gone & the penalties are much stiffer nowadays if you're caught without having the old paperwork in order

Reminds me of a story from my own area back in the '60s. A local man had two vehicles of similar make - with one pair of number plates & one current tax disc between them. One plate was fitted to the front of one vehicle & the other plate was fitted to the rear of the other vehicle. He used both vehicles almost on a daily basis. The nature of his work meant that he had to drive into the city on most days so he had to make sure that the tax disc was always on the vehicle making that journey. This went on for many years. I can still remember those two old crocks to this day. The big giveaway was the fact that the two vehicles were different colours - one was blue & the other was black. But of course nobody worried about technicalities like that back in those days :lbhbh::lbhbh:

Yep, you are welcome, just doing my part. :thumbsup2:

There are like 16 houses in this cul-de-sac and four houses have motorbikes. And two more have visitors / relatives on motorbikes.

Young lad couple of doors away is on his first bike with provisional license (I would like to think I inspirted him because he grew up watching me riding around the place :thumbsup2: but I suspect he has friends who are into dirt biking etc).

It's great to see at the various charity runs etc, large contingents of folk with amazing bikes who do not have english as a first language. Many more hot foreign wimmin on bikes too.
More of this sort of thing please. Back when I had a white licence, the only women on bikes were (a) the postmistress on a honda 50 (b) eibhlin ni luinichan at the drag racing.
These days drag racing means something completely different also, but I digress.
More bikes=less congestion
more bikes=bigger lobby group for better roads etc
more bikes=cheaper insurance.
As for not taxing the bike back in the day, there was other things you could do with £20/£12/£8.

If Honda followed up and stayed making decent looking bikes with attractive styling they would sell loads more. Bikes like the Blackbird, Pan European were discontinued and it has left the sports touring choice all to Yamaha. I hear they are selling the last of these due to emission control. Honda donít give a f##k about their customers

Same here for Danfay.

So where are the missing figures ??

Unlikely BMW is the second highest (in units) , and in any case most of them are rented to the riders.

Think it a common option in blighty for the bigger adventure/touring market, personally I like to buy a bike that I run and own to my liking
