Buying a track bike

Hows it going lads? When these restrictions have eased up a bit I'm considering buying a track bike. I want to start doing a few track days and dont really want to use my road bike in case I end up dropping it. Just want to get peoples opinions on what would be a decent bike to start off with - something reliable with good parts availability. I was looking at 600s but theres loads of bikes to choose from - K2 Gsxr, Cbr 600 f4, early R6 maybe an SV 650. Anybody have any opinions on those? What would be my best bet for a beginners track bike? Thanks lads

A 600 is plenty especially if your only planning on doing mondello your only gonna be in 2nd or 3rd gear most of the time, speaking from experience avoid the carb model r6,great bike but the engines are dirt and the frames are soft as shite, come up in the years as much as you can all 600s have a hard old life on track👍🏼

The 650s will make you learn. You can't hide with power. You have to learn to corner properly

Re: Buying a track bike

Pre-97 CBR 600 would be bulletproof and ideal for trackdays.

That's what I'll be using if we ever get going this year.

I'd recommend a 650 twin. Raced an sv650 for 2 years and loved every minute of it. You can still do fairly quick lap times on a twin but you actually feel like you're getting the most from the bike unlike a 600 or 1000. They're cheap enough to buy and run aswell, tyres last longer than supersport 600s too.

Just be careful when buying a bike as some race/track bikes out there have had a fairly hard life and may have hidden issues. I have also seen first hand some of the guntering/bodging that goes on in the paddock and it ain't pretty:lbhbh:!!

Best of luck anyway:thumbsup2:

Go on - give us a few anonymised examples.....:smileee:

Agree on the SV650 as an ideal track bike for these shores - why you'd want a thou in Mondello is beyond me.....

Fine for Portimao or Losail or the likes.

Re: Buying a track bike

600 is a fantastic bike for Portimao.
Been there 3 times allready and the 600 is very well suited to both Portimao and Cartegena.

Re: Buying a track bike

Thanks for all the replies lads some great advice there. My personal preference would probably be an SV650 - I dont need much power I'm only doing it for the craic. They seem to be fairly thin on the ground at the minute though. I know someone who might be selling a CBR 600 f3 - it's not a track bike and it needs a few jobs done but it would probably do me. I could tinker away at it and convert it into a track bike over time

Get any old 600 R6,CBR, ZX.....you wont need to worry about binning it....or you could spend thousands on one ..then try sell it...!!
