It is difficult to answer without full information. I assume you took the
A2 test because you held a learner permit prior to Dec 2010 and were
exempt from mandatory training for A2.

If this is the case, your options are:

Progressive access
Wait until you have held the full A2 for two years. Apply for a new
learner permit for category A. Complete the necessary training module(s)
on a category A bike. Apply for full A licence.

Direct access
New category A learner permit.
Training module(s) on a category A bike.
Apply for and take the category A test.
Apply for full A licence.

The second option may be quicker because it short-cuts the
two year wait. Either way, you need to do the mandatory
training to progress to category A. Your instructor should be
able to offer advice and hire of a category A bike for the test.

Re: Progression code A2 to A

I have my cat A prov since yr dot(87) but missed 1 cycle of prov licence hence having to complete lgbt 1 3 5 to get my A so I went for A2 as I was told only 5weeks prior to doing d test I would have to do the 3 day course at a cost of e450
But when I Passed my test I was informed when 6mts was up I could do 1 days training for the A after 6mts of holding both full A2 and prov A ????

if you hold a full license in another category ,ie cage etc, you might not have wait the 2 years to apply for the full A test ,

Ehhh... I don't think that's the case - the only bearing a full licence in another category (held for over 2 years) has is that it negates the requirement to wear an N vest for 2 years after passing test.

As your first A provisional was issued before 1999, you could be exempt
from all training requirements, provided you don't have a "gap in validity"
exceeding five years.
but missed 1 cycle of prov licence
Check those dates carefully. A five year gap puts you
back to square one.
hence having to complete lgbt 1 3 5 to get my A so I went for A2 as I was told only 5weeks prior to doing d test I would have to do the 3 day course at a cost of e450
It would have been better to do modules 1,3,5 last year. For someone
over 24, the only advantage of doing A2 is that it kicks the cost of
training two years down the road.
But when I Passed my test I was informed when 6mts was up I could do 1 days training for the A after 6mts of holding both full A2 and prov A ????
Module 5 (upgrade module) allows someone who has previously done
mandatory training to upgrade without having to repeat the entire course.

Module 5 takes 11 hours, which is quite a lot to squeeze into
one day. 1,3,5 takes 18 hours.

Like you, I have heard rumours that a person over 24 can take
progressive access without having to wait two years. The RSA
motorcycle licence chart and other RSA publications would suggest
that you can't.

The RSA/NDLS licensing rules are based on a loose interpretation
of EU driver licensing directives. Many RSA/NDLS staff seem to have
very little knowledge of the current rules and they do seem to bend
them from time to time. From my point of view, you have nothing
to lose by attempting to get your A licence by progressive access.
Get your A learner permit, do the necessary training modules
and apply for a full A. Best case, they will give it to you.
Worst case, they will refuse and you will have to either
wait out the two years or take the A test.

My knowledge of motorcycle licensing is a few years old.
As shafty said, rubadub will have up to date information.

Confusion has it correct.

If you have a full A2 you can only upgrade after 2 years by completing module 5 on an A category bike provided you have previously completed modules 1 and 3 in a previous i. b. t.
If you haven't done an i. b. t. then you'll have to complete A category modules 1,3 and 5 after two years on A2.
I'm not aware of any pre 99 passes available. The only one I know of is pre 2010 pass on the A2 i. b. t.

Anyone with a provisional A issued prior to November 1999 and without a gap
in validity exceeding five years is exempt from training, even for
category A. Before today, I would have said this was a very
unlikely scenario.

What happens if you go and do the module 5 without waiting the 2 years? Can you only do the module 5 after the 2 years have passed? Would you be able do the module and just wait until you have the licence for 2 years and then the day that you have your licence for 2 years, you go in and apply for a full A licence having completed all your training beforehand.

The RSA confirmation code system would probably prevent you from
doing module 5. This is a code sent to your ADI to confirm that you
are eligible for the progression module.

Re: Progression code A2 to A

If you are 24 or older with a valid A category learner permit and you have already completed modules 1 and 3 then you can take A category module 5 and ride any motorcycle on the A category LEARNER permit as you have completed a full i. b. t. for A category. You are still a learner and therefore subject to those rules.

My interpretation of the process is the RSA want you to wait until the two years have passed however there's nothing stopping you from going ahead prior to the 2 year rule (subject to age and permit requirements ) and then applying for it after the 2 years have passed.

Again my understanding is that the code process is really aimed at riders under 24 who require special permission to upgrade to A prior to their 24th birthday having already spent 2 years on a full A2 licence.

That's good to know.
I done my provisional licence back in 2011 for an A and did the full lgbt. I was given an a2 provisional licence a few years
Wanna get back to biking so since I'm over 24 I want the A
Good to know I only have to do module 5 to get it.
