Opinions please
Hi all I’m back biking after a 26 year lay off I purchased a bmw r1200gs it was all going great , took to it again no problem. Put couple thousand miles on it but was worried about it having no history of been serviced for some years although the guy I bought it from said it was done . Anyway I decided to bring it to a bmw workshop and asked him to service it and change the oil in final drive . He recommended not to change oil in it as bearing was worn and it would leak but he had final drives for sale and he could fit one of them we agreed a price and he done the work . When I paid him and picked up the bike he told me the abs sensor wasn’t a match but to give him a few day he’d sort it with his tech guy, 3 weeks later he said leave bike in for a few hour to sort it . That was three weeks ago the final drive and sensor wouldn’t match I asked him to put original drive back on and he still can’t get the abs working , wants to buy the bike now but only offering trade price and I cannot get a replacement for that price and we cannot agree on price for newer bike , he doesn’t seem interested in fixing mine anymore. What do I do now no bike load of hassle.

Re: Opinions please
I’m sure lads will be on to advise on how to deal with this fella who sounds like a bloody chancer to me...
If it’s a BMW workshop there’s no excuse... “can’t get it to work” is bolox. They shouldn’t be claiming to be a BMW workshop. But if you’re looking for technical advice on the issues with the bike and potential work-arounds check out the ukgser forum website. You may have to name and shame them if they won’t fix the issue, I’ve a BMW and don’t ever want to hear that bullshit from someone claiming to be a BMW tech. I’d be looking for my money back for a start. |
Re: Opinions please
Is it a BMW main dealer? If it is I'd take them to court, because BMW.
Or you could sell it to them at trade price and buy a bike that isn't a piece of shit. |
Re: Opinions please
You gave him a fully functional bike and paid him to service it and carry out work... now your bike is no longer fully functional and he’s been paid... and he’s offering to give you a shit price for it because he can’t fix it.... horseshit. Don’t stand for that at all.

. . You may have to name and shame them if they won’t fix the issue
I think that's probably what he's hoping, that they read this and offer him more money so he doesn't name them. That's usually the case when someone fails to mention the name of the garage. Either that or they're being economical with the truth. |

First and only post from the OP. As you say, they may just be looking for some leverage. If it was my bike, I'd be looking for all the original parts and any money I'd paid returned. |

Not always the case. But now that I know Kingdom rads in tralee are wankers, I will sing that song of truth to anyone that will listen :smileee: |
Re: Opinions please
Thanks for the reply’s lads haven’t named and shamed yet . Last we said was I’m taking the bike to another bike shop on Tuesday and whatever it costs I’ll probably have to take legal proceedings to get it back . Unfortunately he not a registered bmw dealer. but it only make of bike he deals with .

Re: Opinions please
Take your bike back, get the job priced in a main dealer and take him to the small claims court to get the cost from him. He knows he fucked up if he's offered to buy it off you. It'll cost you 25 euro and you can claim up to two grand.

Re: Opinions please
What BMW models shit the bed? Is it just the GS?

Re: Opinions please
Taking OP at face value:
Ya are being asked to sell the bike to this dealer at trade price because he cannot fix it and he has already been paid for this job. He also wants to sell ya another bike (one he has serviced already?). A dirty question, where and how did he obtain any bike he might sell? On the basis ya have not withheld relevant facts, don't throw good money after bad, look at the option of taking him to court. |
Re: Opinions please
As mentioned already, court, either small claims or solicitor, tell him thats your intention so he has one more chance to sort it properly, if no joy ,stop dealing with him directly and go the legal route.

That's why I hate these threads :thumbsup2: |
Re: Opinions please
I've been a mechanical fitter for 30 years, I can tell you old oil will cause leaks due to loss of viscosity, new oil will reduce or fix leaks. OP's BMW guy is a cowboy.

Not very community-minded.
So to summarise the jist of this thread... OP wants advice from the community on how to minimise the impact of a bogus mechanic on just himself. OP won't advise the community who that bogus mechanic is, when doing so would likely minimise the impact of that bogus mechanic on the many members of that same community? "...he not a registered bmw dealer. but it only make of bike he deals with..." How many mechanics around fit that description? I'd be pretty sure any BMW owner watching on here will likely know every independent BMW guy out there. OP - less selfishness, more altruism. Pronto! Forget about shaming - name the mechanic dude, or think about fucking off. 1. Help the community, not just yourself. 2. Allow this mechanic to defend himself and salvage his reputation. 3. Allow other customers of his to comment on their experiences with him. |
