Thinking of getting an RVF400(as a step up from my FZR250)- anyone have any advice to offer? e.g. are they a grey import, what kind of money should I pay, are parts still available from Honda, do they make good power, will I be able to get insured without restricting it, etc?

i don't know too much about them but I like them - they're pretty small and i don't think they make any more power than the nc30. I'd imagine you'd be looking at €3K plus

They're probably 60 odd bhp so if your licence has the restriction you might need the restriction kit - about €300

Spoonman on here has the older model and batman oh sold his rvf a while back - they'll know more

I had two rvf's in the past, the first one i had was a minter and im sorry i ever sold it.They are a fabulous handling bike and will stay ahead of bigger machines on the twisties. The difference between the rvf and vfr 400 is,different bodywork, vfr has 18"rear wheel, rvf has 17" rear but the big difference is the showa suspention on the rvf.
Yes they are a grey import, good for 60+horsepower.
Both the rvf's that i had,yes BOTH blew the regulator rectifiers so this is something you will have to take a gamble on when buying and they are not cheap.about 280-300euro +new battery as the old one will be fried.
Apart from that they are pretty bullitproof.
The only reason i would'nt buy another is because they are now group 11 to insure and a 600 would be a better option imo.An r6/cbr 600 wont cost much more
and i doubt if either ins.companys will recognise a restriction on an rvf 400.
This is a pity because they are a brilliant bike and The best 400 bar none!
Just make sure you know what you'll be paying for ins before you buy and throw any questions my way if you need more info

had mine for 2 years
i got an official honda upgraded regulator rectifier for the rvf for 50 quid from honda japan, original parts are very expensive tho!
its true tho, they always go, the heat from the v4 kills it, and the same crappy one is used in a lot of honda bikes
great little bike the rvf, amazing sound with a good midrange for a small bike
looks brilliant too, dont pay over the odds but be careful and look for obviuos signs of abuse and the normal stuff that goes
engine is bullet proof, suspension is sharp but not great on bumpy roads, and the shock is a known crap point, the forks are good enough for almost any situation
slipper clutch too is a neat bonus
the engine wins over all other small capacity sportsbikes, tis just enough power to be quick and to be fully usable on the road

Yea,the second rvf i had i got the upgraded reg/rec,and it was a lot more expensive than the original type one which i put in the first bike. The price i paid was for a genuine honda reg/rec.
Initially when the reg went on the first bike i bought a cheapo reg/rec for 70 yoyo's and it did'nt last pissin time and fried the new battery i had bought. So i had to buy another new battery and the genuine regulator.Moral of the story"cheaper isn't always better"
Symtoms of a regulator on its way out, lights will go crazy, going dim and bright again and you will smell battery acid as the dodgy reg does a george foreman on the battery.

I still have the original honda end can with heat shield from the first rvf i had if anyone is looking for one,tis as new.

If you got a new rvf 400 regulator for 90 euro it's not a genuine one,and if its not a genuine one i would'nt be surprised if it fries your battery some time soon.Keep a close eye on the output from it with a multimetre.

There was a few officially imported into the UK as well, around 1994 - 1995 i think. Dogs Box Motorcycles in Kinnegad has a few of them for sale as well.

Seen one in the BBG.........
It was a 03/04 as far as I can remember for €7000........
I thought they stopped making them at the end of the last century.......

It is not a genuine Honda one!!! It can fit either a rvf/vfr
Im not worried as i got it from Rick Oliver!! (nc30 expert)- he has never had any problems with them!! And they last a long time without any damage to battery.

Thats a late model rvf, slightly different colour sceme with the rvf in yellow on the fairing, the earlier ones had the rvf in white.
1998 is the newest rvf you can get so definitely something wrong there and 7000euro is far too much.

there was some young lad on the 400greybike forum who paid nearly that for a RVF and then found out he couldn't insure it!! I bet he has a ring as big as a circus after the r***ing he got from whoever sold it to him!!

that's probably one of those bikes that mysteriously wasn't registered from 1998 or whenever. It's crazy money - for an extra €500 or so you should be able to get your hands on an early CBR600rr - good and all as the RVF is I wouldn't shell out that kind of cash for one.

You really need to research the jap import bikes before you buy because it seems that a lot of shops now are registering them to look 3-4 or more years younger than they are and upping the price accordingly, feckin scam artists. If you know your stuff you can tell by the colour sceme of the bike what year it is.

7K for that rvf is a joke, the last one i bought in 2002 was a 94 and as far as i remember i gave 4500euro for it and it had twin kevlar under/over cans like the rc45,tinted screen, damper etc.

I was in a bike shop last week and there was a black cbr600rr whice i thought was new as it looked like it was never ridden.Turned out to be a 04,8k kilometres, for 8500 euro,i need to start saving!

there's a 02 R1 for sale here in Tullamore, unregistered and no miles on it. There was a K1 GSXR1000 in Mullingar last year - same thing, unregistered and no miles, it was sitting in the shop for about 3 years.

There was only one, last time i was talking to Sean Coyne, owner of Coyne Motorcycles he was getting out of bikes and only doing scooters and tractor lawnmowers. He used to be one of the biggest bikeshops in the midlands but does feck all now.
Lots of shops within a 30mile radius of Mullingar now though.

Thats a bit of a surprise,i didnt realise coynes were getting out of the bikes.I was in there about a month ago having a look around.

The r6 is coming down in price a good bit now that they are getting older.I think ill buy myself another in the next two years,00 or 01 model, feckin great bike.It has everything, good looks, great handling and a storming engine.
99 red/white model in cbg in cavan for 4500euro.Far better buy than an rvf and not much more to insure.
