Bike Hire

[Wanted]

Anyone know if some of the main shops actually hire out motorbikes for the weekend ? Something walkawayable, like a sordid affair with a moody duke (that you don't have to live with) springs to mind, but less interesting alternatives would do for a quick blast too. :ph34r:

No chance, but to be honest it's not their fault, loads of 'em would do it if the insurance situation wasn't so crazy. I was at the advanced stage of opening an adventure touring business in Ireland using a fleet of KMX125s and a bike training operation with a handful of CB500's but the annual insurance premium was 5 figures...

That KMX craic sounds like fun, obviously more leg snappingly dangerous than similar quad type activities particularily if you get a complete bunch of dopes that dont know what they're doing, Is it not just a case of having public indemnity on a patch of land and the obligatory 'can't touch us you signed this remember' disclaimer ?

I think Hibernian have left the insurance scene now too :mellow:

What about requiring people to transfer over their own insurance?

In fairness, the only people who'd want to rent a bike would be bikers. Plus the old adage "don't be gentle...."

In France, and perhaps several other European countries, you automatically get an A1 licence when you pass your B test so every car driver can legally ride a 125cc bike without ever taking lessons etc. Hence 125cc rental is quite popular here. In Ireland the insurance situation was that the participants had to be over 25 and have held at least an A1 licence for minimum 2 years. Which kinda sucked because it really narrowed the field down a lot. I could teach someone to ride a light motorcycle in about 10 mins and would have supplied all the gear - lids, jackets, boots, n' gloves.

Actually I must look into this again now that garage policies are becoming popular.
