REALLY like this idea. Just had a great run through Scotland west coast and would love to have had a camera running.
However, what I am looking for is an "active" camera which has the continuous loop facility of a black box. Current products offer on/off controls either on the device itself, or on a remote control. These are fine if you know what you want to record. However, it’s often not practical (due to storage limitations) to record ALL of your activity. Ideally a user wants to capture those moments which are exceptional. Such moments, by definition, are unpredictable! The Video Loop concept involves continuously recording video, and continuously erasing anything older than a selected duration . So, when you have just completed a spectacular jump or fall, or you have driven past a wonderful view, or a car has just backed into your favourite toy, you press a Capture Button to “save” the current period of recoded video. This stores it safely in memory for later viewing or recovery. The Video Loop continues until the next event period is selected, and so on. So instead of recording, storing and editing hours of video footage, you end up with only those sections you want to keep! So far I haven't found a product suitable for external sports use that has this facility. For active cameras try: To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. For an idea of black box facilities check out: K2000 1080p HD Car Camera Would love to hear from anyone who has managed to combine features!! |

The drift has a significantly better sound recording facility than the Go Pro with an external mic. I use an older Drift 170 HD and it is excellent. The remote control and screen really do make it a doddle to use. I've never used the countour, but they do a GPS enabled one to allow you to throw up a 'real time' parallel location on a map running with the video...gimmiky, but cool if you know what you want.
I used the Drift and the Go Pro in the same conditions in the back of a helicopter once and I found the colour correction on the Drift to be significantly better than the Go Pro...the GP saturated all the colors to a completely unrealistic extent. The Drift wasn't perfect, but at least the guys didn't glow!!! With the Drift you can record intercom or bike to bike radio easily, not so easy with the GP. I do have to say the GP is way more robust and has better mounts and the waterproof cases are much better...the waterproof case for the Drift is flimsy and the object cap threads are crap....I've broken two now and they aint cheap!! I'm guessing the GP might tug a bit as a helmet cam at any resonable speed, cos it's a bit of a brick. I've never even noticed the Drift tugging, but I do know one guy who lost one when the sticky pad on his helmet came unstuck...make sure you apply the pads in a heated room so the glue sticks properly! The contour has the best profile for a helmet cam, but like I say, I've never used one. I'm dead happy with the old Drift 170 HD. The only problem with them is once you have one, you really need two or three cos all your videos look dead boring without some POV changes!!! |

Pic quality on that Gnarly is very poor, suffers from what they call 'jellyfish' effect a lot...plus the sound quality is ridiculous. When I saw the price I reckoned it might be a possibility, but the youtube vids are pretty telling.

Naah, calafort is after a 'black box'...30 mins of HD on a small card and over written would be good cos it means a 60 min buffer.....tell you what mate, just invest in a big SD card and do the editing yourself!! I've regularly watched someone elses 2 hour videos and decided that 5 minutes is good enuff for me....when they are your own, the timeline becomes a bit easier to track. Digital is never wasted and easily deleted. The more you record, the more surprised you are with what you actually got....bear in mind that 2 hours is usually good for 6 - 12 minutes, depending on what you are shooting. A TT lap is 99% - 100% unsurprisingly.....
