I have no problem with supportng a run that benefits a biker or a bikers family.

Likewise if a biker or his/her family have benefited from a charity and feel they want to give back to the charity.

What is getting to me is the established charities actively going with the bike run idea because they know bikers will show up no matter what. To me these charities are established and allready have a well greased fundraising machine well in place. A day that they take over for a run is a day that the little guy that doesnt have a fundraising machine gets squeezed out of.

These days it is not finacially or physically possible to make all runs, so I am forced to pick and choose, fellow bikers charities and fundraisers for them/their family members will come first for me

Do you mean charity bike runs? I think lots of bikers (myself included) see them as a social event as well as a fundraising exercise. That's why I go on as many bike runs as I can. The problem is that all fundraising activities, such as bag packs, charity walks, bike runs, etc. have become so prevalent that they are starting to piss people off, especially nowadays when people just don't have much spare cash to donate. I'd still go on any charity bike run that I felt was for a deserving cause, but that's not saying that I'd go on every run that came up.

was only thinking about this today!!! and I think they have. my first ever one was three counties run that slapper brought me on, good craic met aload people and there was the rock night thing going on, to me it was fucking brilliant

but then other ones i've been on are shite, no marshals or any thought about biker/public safety, "just bring your money" attitude.

to me the good side of it is gone, meeting old faces, introducing new ones, having a bloody laugh, there's too much fucking bitching and whinging and politics involved in them now.

some i don't agree with at all and think they are a farce, why cant they be more about meeting up having a good time and pissing off home again, why does there have to be charities involved 99% of the time. i give what i can to charities that i want to give to and i dont want to be looked like a cold hearted bitch because i wont "support" such and such run we all have our own charities to support that begin at home.

I enjoy the the meeting up rather than the runs themselves which can be slow and cumbersome

Agree with the comments above though...rather support a biker/biker related charity

i think there is everyone jumping on the band wagon make a quick buck of bikers
i no i run the easter egg run in cork but thats mostly about eggs and thats been running for years before i took it over
the only 2 runs i go on every year is the toy run and the egg run
every cause is as important as the next but when people start putting a min donation on something i will not go
its expensive enough as it is
and if someone says sure tis only a fiver or a tenner thats grand thats one but wat about the next cause and then the next
charities need our money more so now than ever but if you can afford to give then give
but people doing fund raising need to remember not all have the money to give
a tenner is a dinner for 4 and that might be the last tenner for the week

Bingo..>!!!!

When our club decided to run charity events, we agreed that a different charity would benefit from the run each year... last year it was the Irish Wheelchair Association. A charity that's often overlooked when people organise runs, but an organisation that should never be overlooked, because only for the grace of Jehova, any one of us could need their services, and they're struggling to stay afloat.

I'll always support a run for a worthy cause, but the first run we did (I won't say what charity it was for) was about as welcome as a fart in a wet suit, and it was like they were doing us a favour by collecting the money from us.

Any future runs I'm involved in will be for local charities

There a good way of raising money for charitys for sure but they can be lethal too. Organizers doing way less than the legal speed limit on main roads and such. People moan about fast runs but i think the slower ones are as bad.fellas just lookin for a burn up each others ass and stuck behind johnny drivin miss daisy doin 50 in a 100. I go down now an donate an thats it,then head away an do our own thing. Lotta egos involved in them too,too much crap like.

I think they were grand during the boom when everyone had loads of flash cash and didn't mind supporting various good causes and people less fortunate than themselves (some of us sent big cheques to charities and got them wrote off against vat) but things have really tightened up now and it's pushing it to expect bikers, and bikers alone, to support every cause known to man these days.

It costs 20quid just to turn up to a bike run at this stage and there's a lot of fellah's staying at home or putting it into their tank/ feeding their families instead, especially when they realise the 'administration fees' and liberties being taken on some of them.

I think it should evolve, and bikers should start collecting money from ordinary joe soaps on the street rather than being expected to cough up every time a helmet is stuck on, get some corporation (like microsoft who made 370million last year) to sponsor a run, have their stickers on the bikes & photos, loads would turn up if all they're paying for is petrol otherwise with the way it's gone you'll end up with semi-retired rich guys (like bogman) turning up to weekend runs, and everybody will think we'er dicks.
