Default Another DIY Rally Bike

Or john copies paddy so to speak and does a cheap rally bike

Ok so got boared this week, sold my fairings dash etc and fitting rally fairing that got yesterday in post.

be using std forks initally but will be doing same as i did on my f650 daakr, fitting kayaba usd forks. this time i will be using 2 left legs (bit work here) to keep the twin disk setup on the africa twin.

Have to get new headlihgt, new dash. then machine up new fairing stem to hold lights and top of fairing.

will make it so i can fit the dash, gps and in future a elec roadbook.

Then when done i will work on the forks at the side.

have machine up 2 new calliper hangars, new axel and a new top clan stem to take the xrv750 headstock bearings

Always loved that model of the Africa Twin. There has been some pretty epic customizations done to em so I hope your turns out the same.

Would ya not just swap the front end off the KTM or is it easy enough to find two left legs?

price, front ktm system will cost well near 1k.

i hope spend 150 on yz forks and topclamp, i like them and used them in my last conversion. also loads shops will custom bild you internals to upgrade them for larger bikes as they are so common in uk and states.

i have a set yz forks and clamps readyf or me,he also thinks has a set of smashed up legs that lad tired tak apart but used wrong size allen keys and wrecked them. he giving me then for free. so i plan take the cast hanagr off the damaged leg and fit it onto the good forks i have, 2 left legs. them make up axel, new top clamp stem and hangars. all sounds os easy in me head. hahahaha

i have yet to do machining, am starting into it one i get all the bits in post.

waiting on headlight and dash. then i can start work.

forks being collected end next week i hope

all solid,

yes well i hope handle bar orientation will help with it.

but for off road use its perfect, on road, ya it does mean you cant see the front tyre, but hey meant be looking well ahead not down infront out yourself

but yes it is fecking tall but thats what i was after.

be fitting new digi dash and gps up high and then maybe in summer i will also be fitting a roadbook reader for rallies i hope to do in uk

Looks great, excellent project, more info/pics.
Ye sound set on the usd conversion (ye AT lads tend to want rid of the stock wheels yeah?) but if your not the stock fork can be brought up to cartridge spec imo with intiminators. Would have done same as you but for them on my own yoke.

Whats the craic with the caliper lugs on the two lhs kayaba legs, im guessing theyre offset slightly to centre? How do ya square that circle on the rhs leg, cut and reweld or a funky rhs caliper adapter plate?

well the mount had on dakar was stepped ofr the hangar.

so be same here, left leg be a stepped plate to hold calliper,

right leg should be flat plate

Ya i rebuilt my wheels with mx SM Pro rims so they are well sorted now

But ya i am thinking trying get forks sorted but the cost wont be much less than getting mx forks fitted but means lot work

Default Re: Another DIY Rally Bike

My Only thought is that the AT are heavy.
That's why I went for the ktm 640 adv.
Fairing is there already but I would honestly say if I was in a crash situation I would prefere to be hit in AT than the ktm.
Nothing up front to protect you .
Still the power to weight ratio of the 640 adv is excellent.
Lovely job, I would live to go the other direction and do a 450 into a rally bike but for long journals would be a lot of work.

ya i plan doing a 450 some time when winlotto, but as said for trails and off road use there no pointmaking 450 heavier.

africa twin i am actually loosing weight buy dumping heavy metal fairing suppor and std forks so should drop few pounds.

its goodup the trails and off roading, but when have stop andmove it by hand its stupidly top heavy when pushing by hand

mates ktm 640 adv is so light but suffers in reliability in my mind. but the new twin disk 640 eant be lot better. would like one as well just i plan use twin for long distance touwing so its reliability winsover the 640 light weight

mad tough 640 can lift rearcleanoff the ground when no fuel in it

like a full on rally setup but cant afford or justify the cost they charge for the digi dash with remote controls when all it has is a dual trip meter and a switch on handlebar to adjust it. fook that

What ktm are the forks off?
Bummer with the bracket but at least you found out why eh.
That road book is cheap for a leccy one, then again so's everything in comparison to tt, it looks good. The manual acerbis road books worth a look too

Like the clocks, saw that companies gps based speedo before, have that in mind for a job, any notion on it?
