Phillip Island WSBK test: Haslam fractures right leg in crash
20/02/2012 Haslam's participation in the weekend's opening races is in doubt By WSB desk Image by Paul Sturman Factory BMW's Leon Haslam has been diagnosed with a fractured right tibia following a crash exiting the last corner on day one of the official Phillip Island test earlier today. Haslam was pinged over the highside in the fast left-hander and taken to the local Phillip Island hospital when he found he couldn't stand up properly. He has subsequently been transferred to a Melbourne medical centre to undergo an operation to plate and screw a bone fragment back onto the tibia. It is not yet known whether Haslam will be able to take part in the weekend's WSBK opener. He has also fractured a small bone in the left foot. "This is just a disappointing situation, as we were making good progress. Right from the start my lap times were not bad. The crash was quite a big highsider just before the start/finish straight. I landed on my heels, and I thought I could have fractured them. The scans later showed I had fractured the end of my right tibia instead. On top of this, I broke a small bone in my left foot, but this should not be a big issue. I now shall keep my fingers crossed that the surgery goes well and I will be back on the bike very soon," he said. |
