Hi
Hope someone can help me with this before I go forking loads of money out... and apologies for long post but here goes.... Problem with bike not starting after I had washed it – initially thought it was low battery so I whipped it out and charged it up – stuck it back in and she started no problem (although I didn’t go out for a spin then). Left it for two days then went to start it again – battery seemingly dead again (Got multimeter at battery – at 11.8v and only getting fuel pump then buzzing noise when ignition depressed). Had a look on here at some of the battery threads. Few suggesting that the problem could be the reg/rec and that I should get the multimeter across it when the engines at idle and being revved to see if the recififier is charging the battery. Did that this morning – idling at ~14v, no rev counter on the xt so I just revved the shit out of it for a while – multimeter didn’t budge. So the question is am I to presume that this is just the reg/rec? when I was washing it im pretty sure some of the electrics (including the reg/rec) got a bit of a rinse as well (a rinse as in a power hose rinse). I blasted all the connections with air and then WD40 and left it for a hour, once I had charged the battery then she started. Is there anthing else this could be? Fucked battery as well? Problem with alternator? earthing somewhere else? Thanks in advance To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. |

14 volts is a good charging voltage. I would suspect your battery is f***ed. Any decent battery should give 12.8 volts....only giving 11, I would think there's a cell gone. Bring the battery to any bike shop, and get them to check it.

Sounds like the batt to me too. 14 volts means that your gettin a charge. Try it with the light on like the noob said.
Try charging the batt until full. Measure the voltage off the charger and measure it again after a few hours. If it goes from say 12.8 to 12 then ya need a new battery. |

ideally get a manual and follow the troubleshooting steps. Probably the first one would be to check the charging system, multitester and engine running at whatever rpm the manual says.

Thanks for the rapid responses lads

I thought that increased revs would increase the voltage at the batt as well though? High beams not on while checking voltage Noob Think Ill charge battery again later and check for voltage drop over a few hours as youre saying - voltage drop and its probably batt then? And thanks for that pdf Ant, some of it sounds a bit heavy but it might be handy to have if it turn out its not batt…although my track record with "fixing" the bike, maybe i should just leave to a pro To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. |
