measured all of them with feeler gauge. looks like they,ve not bein done for a while To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. they are all out of spec - and pretty tight. could not measure cylinder no 1 Inlet. Too tight even to get feeler gauge in To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. Could me valves be after getting damaged as result?? |

if no clearance then step it out to maximum clearance and measure again, btw...its very very typical on anything with zx in it to have little or no clearance, lads think i do just be harping on about it but clearances are acrucial part of a bikes servicing, esp on kwackers. |

often seen zzr600s with 20000 miles on them need 16 shims, then remeasure, then need a further 10 changed again lol

I have been reading this very informative thread. Thanks everyone!
Where are the pics? I am intending to do valve job on two bikes in the coming month. I am a first timer and I am intent on doing it myself! (Gotta learn sometime!) FZR1000 Genesis and an FZR400. Badly need doing. I have the following questions 1. What does a worn valve guide look like Pics Please? It would be handy just to see a picture. 2. Where can I go to get reasonably priced Shims? 3. Are some or all shims interchangeable? i.e. Can you swap shims from one bike to another? 4. Can you use shims from a broken bike on a newer bike? Do the shims wear with age? (I am guessing not?) I am sure I will figure all this out for myself anyway but its always nice to hear from the old hands first! |

I'm started my fzx project a couple of weeks ago and tonight I cleared the bench and lobbed the engine atop of it. It badly needs a good clean etc, but I've checked the clearance again and she's only out by 7 from 20, which ain't bad thank fuck!!! I think I heard that the valves get tighter in the genesis engine, but I can swap all 4 inlets to suit each other, my question is should I just go away and get 4 shims to suit the end of the scale(looser) rather than tigher-middle scale?? I upload me readings and tell me what ya think! sound

To view pics on this biker's forum - your post count must be 2 or greater. also it has 42k miles on it, what ya reckon I could do to it before I clean it and lob it back in? before the strip down of the bike, the engine never smoked and ran very well. does it need anything? i was 7 not 4 shims out Last edited by benny13; 19th July 2011 at 10:14 AM. |
