sounds like the valve clearances are off.
i think the ol xj is shims and not tappets .you measure the clearance betweem the shim and the cam lobe and if its tight or loose you remove the shim and replace with the correct size one .
valve clearances can be from 160 - 300 (depends on workshop) to get checked and more if they need adjusting ,ie shims getting put in .
theres a special on in my place this month, 170 including all shims .
bikes with tappets are obviosly cheaper as they are easier to do.
I'll probably pop down to you place at some stage then. This tapping sound is driving me spare.
