Default Honda CG 125 v Yamaha YbR 125

Can anyone recommend one over the other as a commuter bike going in and out to work every day?

Can't comment on the YBR, but ran a CG for many a mile with no worries - regular oil changes and they just run n' run

dont no much bout em, but the varadero 125 is a great comuter , handy on petrol, weather protection looks good, cheap enough! looks like a bigger bike so cars pay more attention to you, and well capable of holding a top box if needed

i have had both and to be quite honest there is not much between them, obviously the cg has been around since the year dot and reliability is unrivalled but the yam engine is just as good, has also been around a long time (was in old sr125, had one of those too, never broke it)
the yam is the fresher looking one of the two, the honda adheres to the adage, if it aint broke dont fix it.
i currently have a ybr(for sale) i have ridden it all winter through some of the worst riding conditions i have ever seen and the bike did not falter once, its unreal how good these 125's are on petrol, i dont understand why more people dont own one for the daily commute, they keep up with the traffic and fit in to the tiniest gaps, i think too much pressure is placed on new riders to ignore the 125 catagory, for purely macho reasons and i think this is a big mistake as they (4stroke) are extremely forgiving bikes ideal for learning how to ride safely on

rant over!

not a fair comparison the cg is an old bike the ybr is a new one
you should compair the cbf and the ybr or else the cg and the sr

true, the ybr is newer, but mine is the 06 model with carb, not injection and like i said this engine has been around for a good 25 years. the rest of the running gear is also tried and tested fare, hell even the frame looks just like my rd one

and as far as i know, the cg now comes with disk brake on front and a catalytic converter just like the ybr. like i said, fresher looks, tried and tested running gear, so the comparison is closer than you may think

I know this might be sacrilege to say this but is there an argument for getting a 125cc moped over a bike if it's primary purpose is for commuting in and out to work? The mopeds have more storage space and they give you more protection from the weather. There's also the fact that your legs are not straddled over the side and rubbing off the engine and getting oily and dirty especially if you have to wear a suit to work.

I'd ask the girlfriend but she's biased. Looks good on her moped tho.

Apart from the aesthetics. Is there any downside to getting a moped based on maintenance, reliability, running costs etc?

No, you just look silly.

A four-stroke moped from any of the well-known (=not Chinese) brands will do exactly what you want with a bit more weather proection and storage space. Sometimes you sacrifice braking power or tyre choice, but on a commuter thats rarely a concern.

Personally I'd have a Burgman 250 or a Honda Foresight 250. Learner legal, economical, good brakes and able to keep up with traffic 80-100kph.

'cptr (that'll be 2cents please...)
