isb bsb wsbk motogp racing icon TT 2018: Senior win and 135mph lap record for Hickman

The 135mph barrier has been broken on the Isle of Man as Peter Hickman recorded a phenomenal final lap to edge the Senior TT over Dean Harrison.

Click the image to open in full size.

Hickman, on his Smiths Racing BMW, recorded his second win of the week with a 135.452mph final lap around the Mountain Circuit, smashing all previous records and beating Harrison, on his Silicone Engineering Kawasaki, by 2.061 seconds.

The lap time also means the TT has become the fastest road race in the world, taking the title from the Ulster Grand Prix, who were quick to respond on Twitter.
Wow. We had a feeling the record would go today given the pace on the island this year, but what a last lap that is from @peterhickman60!

Congrats of course to the @iom_tt on the new title, but please don't get too comfortable. We'll want it back come August! pic.twitter.com/1lqKlTpzAD

But the race will go down as one of the greatest Senior TT races to ever be staged on the Isle of Man, with Hickman overtaking Harrison right at the end on his way to the lap record.

The final place on the podium went to Conor Cummins on the Padgetts Motorcycles Honda, while Ballymoney rider Michael Dunlop - chasing a 50th winner for the Dunlop clan - had to settle for fourth on his Tyco BMW.

"What can I say? Wow! What a tough race. Dean was absolutely on it, he was leading the whole race. I could gain over the mountain but he was pushing the first two sectors," a delighted Hickman said.

"What an awesome end. Mega. I rode as hard as I could, I knew it would come down to the last half a lap."

Harrison had led from the start, just about holding off the challenges of Hickman, Cummins and Dunlop in the initial stages, but by the final couple of laps it had become a two-horse race for the chequered flag.

Despite Hickman setting a new lap record on the fourth lap, it was still Harrison who led the way into the latter stages, with Hickman in hot pursuit.

It all came down to the final lap, and when Harrison got caught up in some slow backmarkers, Hickman seized his opportunity to get out in front for the first time in the race, a position he wouldn't surrender.

When the two riders crossed the line, Harrison's lap of 134.918mph would have been enough for a new lap record had Hickman not completely smashed it with his stunning ride.

Despite being forced into second, Harrison commented: "I'm over the moon, disappointing on the last lap to get stuck between so many slow riders. I lost four seconds from Sulby Bridge onto Ramsey and I lost the race by two.

"But fair play to everyone on the podium. I can't ask for much more, what more could I do? I had the lead all race and got held back. I take the rough with the smooth and I'm just happy to be here."

Final standings

1. Peter Hickman (Smiths Racing BMW)

2. Dean Harrison (Silcone Engineering Kawasaki)

3. Conor Cummins (padgettsmotorcycles Honda)

4. Michael Dunlop (Tyco BMW)

5. Josh Brookes (Norton Motorcycles)

6. Gary Johnson (RAF Regulars & Reserves Kawasaki)

7. Martin Jessopp (Riders Motorcycles BMW)

8. Jamie Coward (Team Penz13 BMW)

9. Davey Todd (Burrows Engineering Racing Suzuki)

10. Brian McCormack (Vanfleet Transport BMW)

Micko Sweeney 12th

Serious pace from the very start, but what a last lap as Hickson reeled in Harrison at each commentary/transponder point to the finish

Usual racers excuses me bollo#......its a valid point and a lottery who exactly benifits from the slow down having to deal with backmarkers....

Disapointed for Dean. It was nicked off him in the end by the better rider on the day...well done Hickman. One of the best Senior's for years.

Yup, Dean rode hard enough all week to deserve it but you can't take that last lap away from Hickman. He put it all on the line when it counted.

Totally agreed, but not forgetting the Northern lads - John Burrows rider newcomer Davey Todd and Shaun Anderson were well up there.

Good year for McCormack, but feel sorry for Derek Shield. With the weather they had this year, ya kinda feel sorry you didn't book a pricey crap schedule ferry ages go?
