Default Learner Questions....again

Hi all,

I have a few queries about getting started riding,

I am 38, recently just got my Learner permit (didn't have to do theory test thankfully)

Will be looking at starting training in the new year and I have a few queries,

1)Can you ride a bike on a learner permit now before you have started your training, I can't find anywhere that says one way or the other,

2)I have a permit for Cat A bikes due to my age (finally something working in my favour!)

Is there anywhere you can find a good explanation of what bikes fit this category?

I used to ride my brothers bike years ago but only around village at home so I have a little bit of experience but looking forward to getting the proper training,

Bike wise, I prefer sports bikes to the more upright cruisers.

Few guys I spoke to recommended a CBR600 as they are a good bike with enough power to keep your interest, I would only be using the bike the odd good weekend and the very odd day I might take it to work (60 Mile round trip).

Just curious to see what you folks recommend

Thanks

No. You can ride on a learner permit if you have your training completion cert

or

You are accompanied by an ADI.

Any motorcycle. There are no power or capacity limits.

When you get around to doing the RSA test next year, there are particular
requirements for a bike used for the category A test. Basically 595cc or
more, engine power of 50kW+, weight of 175kg+

Bike wise, I prefer sports bikes to the more upright cruisers.
It can be difficult to get insured on some sports bikes unless you
have some no-claims history and/or a full licence. Always get
a couple of quotes for insurance before you buy a bike.

You might be ok with an older CBR600F - anything with more Rs may
lead to insurance problems.

The CBR600F are famously good and reliable bikes. They are a
bit too small for me. As above, get a quote first and try for size
before you buy.

Don't be in any hurry to buy a bike. You will probably be doing the
mandatory training on a school bike. You might get a chance to try
a few different bikes then. Bike prices should be a bit lower in winter.

Good Luck.

a bandit 6 as suggested, you should be able to pick one up for handy enough money, there very easy to service which means smaller mechanic bills , there a fun bike too to ride and the "s" sports models might tick your sport bike lust, they generally hold there money (if kept mostly stock & not too custom ruined) so you wont loose too much if you upgrade in a year or 2. a lad on here has or had a lovely blue bandit 600 for sale, well kept , have a look in the for sale threads it will give you a baseline as opposed to done deal prices,
cant comment on the hornets and fazers as I never had one

fair play to you and good luck

Thanks for the advice much appreciated,

I have full car licence for the last 10 years or so, I'm hoping insurance won't be too crazy but as you say that all depends on the bike you are trying to cover.

I'm not gone on the look of the Fazer\bandit\hornets, etc I prefer the full fairing on the sport bikes but will have a better idea once I complete the training.

I was hoping to avoid buying something for 6-12 months and then change again when I get bored of it, thats why I was thinking a cbr600 would do for longer but I understand your point of starting off on something that powerful.

Don't jump on to a sports bike as a learner, thats just crazy, you didn't jump out of the womb and start doing cartwheels, take it handy.
I was on a 125 for a few yrs, insurance went down and I picked up some skillz and graduated to a 400 and then 750 streetbike then 750 sportsbike
