It's on the lower leg - old-fashioned pre-upside down style - but yeah, could have been scraped rotating them and contacting the mudguard or wheel.

I think given the unknowns, for sake of peace of mind I'll chase up one of those chemical crack detection kits. Even if it polished out I'd have no peace riding it, or if I ever sold it on.

That looks terrifyingly like a crack that has propagated over time. I wouldn't ride it until tested. A dye test might prove otherwise but better than your fork leg letting go.

I'd be inclined to agree with ya. A crack wouldn't have such smooth meanders. And when you put stress on it,if it were a crack you would have seen it opening up. Do what is need to do to in order to settle your own mind, but I wouldn't be too worried about that.

Spoke to some mechanical engineers at work. They know what they are speaking about. The general feeling was that if that was cracked it would be leaking and in the stress area that it is, would probably have broken by now if it is 88 percent around the leg. Keep an eye on it for fork oil.... that is of course providing that there is oil in the leg. Some bikes only have oil in one leg.

Thanks scorpy - and all the rest of ye. My gut feel says it's a scratch too, and something I could polish out and keep a close eye on over time - but for peace of mind, and especially if I sell her on down the line to some poor bugger who wouldn't have a clue, I'll test it.

Besides - the braking is truly sh1te. Might finally be a good excuse to fit a new front end with some modicum of retardation :)

Plenty of retardation on the other side of the handlebars Al.

Should balance out nicely.

LOL

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about that - watch for any signs of oil seeping out but otherwise ride it like you stole it.
