Default Text1le gear armour going stiff after a few years?

I washed and waterproofed my gear at the weekend as I do every year, and when I took out the armour I noticed it seems to have gone really stiff. I use the bike all year round, and I have never noticed the armour being that stiff, I definitely remember it being softer when I bought the jocks.

I have SAS tec armour like this:

Also, the same type armour in the wife's gear, which only does a few thousands of kms in a year, is much softer and flexible.

Anyone noticed anything similar? Does armour have a shelf life?

Not sure if it has a shelf life but at the end of the day it's just a bit of foam. It's definitely better to have it than not but I think it gives people a false sense of security.

It shouldn't stiffen with normal use,but repeated contact with solvent, strong UV exposure or cleaning them with a silicone based polish won't help. I'd contact the manufacturer and ask their opinion.

Jokes aside, the armour itself is never washed or anything, the only thing it may be in contact with could be moisture, but that's it.

As an aside, what's good to waterproof with, have a set of RST textiles, which should really be renames spong-iles!

For some reason the word t-e-x-t-i-l-e-s gets changed to gimps when you hit submit reply, one for the mods.

Try it someone, reply with the word t-e-x-t-i-l-e-s but without the hyphens, see what happens, no messing.

I treat gore-text stuff with nikwax products. Wash with Tech wash, then soak in TX-direct wash-in, then douse with TX-direct spray. Prob overkill, but my gear gets a used a lot in the rain.
I do my and the missus's jockss and pants once a year, and use a bottle of each of the three in the process. The wife's jocks is not goretex but it's been waterproof so far.
